After seeing his captivating performance in Army of the Dead, the creator, director, and producer of the Netflix Original, Zack Snyder came up with the concept of a follow-up film surrounding Deiter, played by Matthias Schweighöfer.
Snyder’s wife and primary producer of Army of the Dead, Deborah Snyder was particularly interested in the project due to an oddity – the two films belong to completely different genres. Army of the Dead was a zombie apocalypse thriller while Army of Thieves is a romantic heist.
Army of Thieves has Ludwig Deiter as the protagonist in a reprising role from Army of the Dead. The film is based six years before the events of Army of the Dead, during the beginnings of the zombie breakout.
Matthias Schweighöfer not only plays the eccentric character on-screen but is also the one behind the camera lens – directing the movie. The German actor, director, and producer has directed several movies he has starred in. Likewise, he jumped at the opportunity to return to the role in this film, shot in the Czech Republic in 2020.
