To evoke the impression of something lazy and lacking energy, they use gudegude. The second part is from the Japanese word tamago, which means egg. So, the translation of Gudetama can be “lazy egg”. Its personality and appearance match its name: It is a depressed egg.

It is in total contrast to other positive and active characters in Japanese Kawaii culture. Gudetama’s visible lack of enthusiasm and symptoms of depression are its main characteristics. But its laziness and depression are exactly the reasons why it became a symbol of the Japanese kawaii culture. It is popular worldwide and the popularity continues to spread even today. Gudetama has a media franchise that includes a toy line, comics, animated series, clothing apparel, and other media.

So, how can Netflix stay behind? Recently, Netflix announced that there will be a series named Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure. It is about a lethargic and depressed egg, who knows that it would end up on somebody’s plate. Therefore, he doesn’t bother finding its mother. But Gudetama is forced out of the fridge by the enthusiastic, intimidating chick Shakipiyo. Together, this odd couple set out on a quest to find their mother.
