9/10 Top Trending Movies on Netflix USA for Past Week Are Not Netflix Originals, What Does It Hint for the Streamer?
Netflix uploads approximately three thousand hours of original content every year and even after having ample original content, this week’s movie charts were topped by old classics. Seven out of the ten movies to top the charts are action-thrillers. They are mainly movies that became classics because of the famous actors they had, whom the audiences saw as icons of those times.
Only a few of these movies are critically acclaimed which tells us that the audiences might not be looking for a review score; they just wanted to feel comfortable with the movies they saw growing up. Let’s take a look at them.

What the Originals fall back on
What most of these movies have in common are big stars, legendary directors, and the genre. In comparison with Netflix Originals, they look rather shallow. Most Originals don’t have iconic stars; or are known for their work, unlike 9 out of the 10 movies on the list. Netflix also doesn’t pay any heed to the content that goes in its originals, there are rarely any biographies, true stories, or success stories.
What audiences are seeing is so archetypal to Netflix, most of their content looks the same. They’ve lost the variety because they have an army of coming-of-age comedies, action-thrillers, and horrors; but most of them aren’t made by an acclaimed crew. It looks like Netflix produces most shows to be fairly good so they can fill some content on their site; and not for their audiences to remember the movie forever.

Netflix also falls back on promoting the movies that have been popular in the past, as they can serve as comfort movies for people who have already watched them.
Netflix is also kinda unbelievable, because of all the average content it keeps promoting; people will never know if there’s a film between them that’s worthy of their attention. They might have had all the big stars in their originals but most originals have lesser-known filmmakers which gives their films a very TV-series vibe.
It doesn’t pay off like a big starrer movie that people are looking forward to go watch at a cinema. Netflix can’t seem to replicate the cinema experience, even though we know they’re capable of it. Tell us in the comment below what you think Netflix Originals lack?
