With Tom Cruise’s natural valor as a bonus to the cast and crew, Top Gun’s sequel was an anticipated one. While Top Gun: Maverick was released in cinemas on 24th May, fans scooted to Netflix for a quick catch-up on its 1986 prequel. Top Gun is still on the streamer but it’s not going to last long.

The US Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program teaches a select few, the tactics to fight and strike. The program is widely known as TOPGUN, and the movie was named after it. It follows lieutenant Pete ‘Maverick‘, played by Tom Cruise, who is given a chance to train at this prestigious school.

He finds himself in a constant tussle with his colleague, Iceman, played by Val Kilmer, who thinks Pete is more prone to abandon his teammates to pursue his own objectives. Their impossible union happens in an impossible way; situations lead them to team up and take down enemy aircraft; and with a newfound respect for one another, Ice and Maverick return to base.

For the people rushing to Netflix to catch up on the prequel – you all will have to hurry more. Top Gun is going to be on Netflix only for 5 more days; i.e till the 31st of May, after which fans might be on their own.

The sequel seems like it’s everything more than the first one. Top Gun: Maverick already boasts a rating of 97% on the Tomatometer; indicative of a must-watch. Why watching the prequel might be important

The sequel doesn’t start where the prequel left it off. In the new movie, Pete has been working as a successful pilot for 30+ years and still picks up plots he can’t get himself out of. He is an advance level air fighter now, and to understand his psyche, fans must know his background, which is only possible through the prequel.

Interestingly, Tom Cruise was against using any green screens or CGI for special effects. The stunt king firmly insisted on doing all the shots himself and underwent rigorous training to fly like a fighter. This too is a reason to watch the prequel, so you can spot differences between reality and special effects, and find real appreciation for Cruise’s stunts.
