Roma
Roma is a powerful and one of the best films by the visionary director Alfonso Cuaron. It follows the story of a domestic worker, Cleo, and is set in the Aflonso’s childhood hometown of Roma. The film was a massive hit among critics and a front runner for Oscars the year it was released. And won two of the major categories.
This Netflix Original brought the streaming site Oscars for Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography.
The Power of the Dog
Jane Campion‘s return to cinema marked a tale about ranch owning brother with the themes of sexuality and toxic masculinity. The Netflix film was a popular choice to win the Best Picture in this year’s Oscar but lost to CODA. However, it did not go empty-handed.
Jane Campion won the Best Director award, which she so rightly deserved. The Power of the Dog is beautiful just to look at. Be sure to check it out.
Marriage Story
Netflix has a huge library of drama films with high emotions. But none of them come even close to making us cry like Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story does. The film is an absolute tear-jerker. The story is about a married couple going through a divorce and how they deal with it.
The movie was nominated for a bunch of Oscars, including Best Picture, Actor, and Actress. But won only in Best Supporting Actress. Laura Dern won her first Academy Award for the film.
Mank
We all might not have seen Citizen Kane, but we sure have heard of it. The film Mank goes behind the curtains of the classic movie Citizen Kane to the time when writer Herman J. Mankiewicz aka Mank was writing the future classes. The film gives us an insight into the writer’s life and what events inspired him to write the film’s screenplay.
Mank won two of the major technical awards, including Best Cinematography and Best Production Design. Fun fact Mank is the only Netflix Original to have won an Oscar for the Best production Design.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
This movie is the last ever to star the late actor Chadwick Boseman. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is an award-winning play by August Wilson about a recording session in Chicago in 1927.
The film won in two categories Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. And just like Mank, they are the sole winners for Netflix in their categories.
Icarus
Bryan Fogel‘s documentary film Icarus was released in 2017. It follows Fogel’s investigation into the possibility of doping to win an amateur bicycle race and his discovery of a large international doping scandal when he seeks the assistance of Grigory Rodchenkov, the Russian anti-doping laboratory’s chief.
Icarus was the first Netflix-produced film to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2018 but not the last.
American Factory
After Icarus, two years later, American Factory won in the same Best Documentary Feature category. The film is about the shifting ground of globalization, as are workers’ attempts to find stability there across national, cultural, and racial divides.
My Octopus Teacher
Netflix’s latest win in the Best Documentary Feature was with last year’s My Octopus Teacher. The film portrays the touching narrative of Craig Foster, a South African naturalist, and his bond with the octopus he encounters during diving lessons in False Bay.
The White Helmets
As of 2022, Netflix has only two wins in the Best Documentary Short Subject category. The first win was in 2017 when The White Helmets, a film wherein the middle of the instability and violence in Syria and Turkey, volunteer rescue workers put their lives on the line to save civilians, won.
Period. End of Sentence.
And the second time in 2019 when Period. End of Sentence. won. The film is about the fight against the profoundly ingrained stigma associated with menstruation.
If Anything Happens I Love You
If by now you think Netflix has won only in live-action categories, then you are wrong. In 2021 Netflix’s 12 minutes short animated film If Anything Happens I Love You won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film.

Two Distant Strangers

This 2020 film is told through the viewpoint of a character imprisoned in a time loop that constantly ends in his death. The film explores the deaths of Black Americans during encounters with police. Two Distant Strangers won the Academy Award for Best Short Live Action. It is Netflix’s only nomination and thus, only wins in the category.
