“In a war-torn feudal Japan filled with mechs and magic, the greatest ronin knew, Yasuke struggles to maintain a peaceful existence after a past life of violence. But when a local village becomes the center of social upheaval between warring daimyo, Yasuke must take up his sword and transport a mysterious child who is the target of dark forces and bloodthirsty warlords.”
On the other side, upcoming anime’s producer, creator, and director Thomas also had somethings to say about the series as well.
“There is a serendipitous nature about this project, how an African-American man goes to Japan to live and work amongst the very best in Japanese anime to create an anime about an African who goes to Japan to live amongst the Japanese elite and become a warrior. Part of me deep down feels I was meant to create this adventure series with MAPPA, Flying Lotus, LaKeith & the rest of this talented team.
Yasuke is a fascinating, mysterious figure in Japanese history that’s drawn growing interest in today’s media over the decades. I first learned of Yasuke’s role in Japanese history over a decade or so. The children’s book, Kuro-suke by Kurusu Yoshio, featured images that piqued my curiosity. To eventually learn that he wasn’t just a fictional character, but a real person, was exciting material for an adventure story.
I’m so excited for both longtime fans and newcomers to enjoy our reimagined take on this historical figure.”
The upcoming anime will include 6 episodes in it and each of them will last around 30 minutes of runtime.
Yasuke is known as the only Black Samurai of Japan and also the only known non-Japanese retainer to serve daimyō Oda Nobunaga as well. Back then, the reason he went to Japan in 1579 under the service of Italian Jesuit missionary, Alessandro Valignano. Buf afterward, Yasuke was convinced to be covered in black ink by Oda Nobunaga, when they met and Oda Nobunaga fascinated by Yasuke’s skin. And this is how he became a Samurai and took completely on blacks.
After some time, Oda Nobunaga also managed to take Yasuke under his own service and stayed beside him on the conquest to unite Japan. And until the Honnō-ji incident, which had been followed by the death of Nobunaga, he kept serving him during those years. So after Nobunaga’s death, Yasuke started his son’s forces and while fighting for the Nobutada he was soon being captured by the man who was responsible for Nobunaga’s death.
It has been said that Yasuke was given to the Christan church, but on the other side, historians usually doubt this as well. And there are no more records are left in any type about Yasuke’s existence after he had captured. So, we, unfortunately, can’t know what exactly happened to him.
The only cast member of the anime series that is confirmed officially so far is LaKeith Stanfield, and he will be the voice of Yasuke on the show.
