Let’s check out everything we know about Last Summer, which is Netflix’s new Turkish romance movie.

Netflix is a very successful platform when it comes to variety. That’s because they have Netflix Originals from all over the world. There are many blockbusters in different languages, which are praised globally, despite being local productions.

Netflix Turkey is one of the most popular local branches, and the Turkish-language series and movies show us why. The Protector, The Gift, and Fatma are just some of the popular Turkish shows. Netflix is going to add one more movie to its expanding list of Turkish productions soon, and it’s named Last Summer. We originally knew it as Summer ‘96, but it has gone through a name change.

The year is 1996, and the story is set in a sunny town in Southern Turkey. Last Summer tells of a young boy, named Deniz, who goes to his parent’s summer house every summer. They have a pretty good friend group in the neighborhood, but one of those friends stands out. We’re talking about Aslı, who’s a pretty girl, and apparently the childhood crush of Deniz. Our hero, just turning 16, is feeling different and more confident this year, so he wants to get intimate with his crush. He’s starting to feel, you know? However, it seems there will be fierce competition for there’s another boy named Burak, who’s very handsome and athletic. He has a little crush on Aslı, too. Burak seems very dedicated to having her, which is problematic for Deniz. We’ll see how the group will live their holiday with this dramatic love triangle.

Here’s the Netflix synopsis of Last Summer for the curious souls:

“During summer vacation in a beachside town, 16-year-old Deniz seeks the affection of his childhood crush and navigates a love triangle.”

The director of Last Summer is Ozan Açıktan, who directed other Turkish Netflix productions earlier. The Gift headlines his filmography, while Açıktan is also the director of Yarına Tek Bilet, another Turkish-language romance movie on Netflix.

The producers have experience working on Netflix productions, too. Onur Güvenatam is one of the producers, and his earlier works include The Gift and The Protector. The other producers, namely, Onur Güvenatam, Şebnem Kitiş, Burak Oskay, and Tunay Vural, have a pretty good chemistry, as they worked on Yarına Tek Bilet together.

We see some familiar names when we look at the cast, but not all of them have worked on Netflix projects. Nevertheless, all of the major actors have experience working on non-Netflix productions.

Halit Özgür Sarı is one of the actors that we know from The Protector with his role as Arif.

Enver Ceylan, on the other hand, had the role of the police officer in Fatma. He’s currently working on another Turkish Netflix project, too.

Netflix is going to release Last Summer on July 9th, 2021 which is a pretty suitable date for the theme of the movie.
