Netflix has been into video games lately along with the hundreds of other projects they have been developing. Their past productions of game adaptations include Castlevania, Dragon’s Dogma, Minecraft: Story Mode, and The Witcher so far. But also there are much more video game adaptation shows on their way to Netflix, so let’s find out more about what’s ahead of us together.

In July 2019, Netflix announced The Cuphead Show! arrival as a game adaptation animated series. The upcoming series will feature adventures of Cuphead and Mugman across Inkwell Isle, as they explore areas and characters beyond those in the video game. The series seems mostly to target children, but Studio MDHR also anticipated that they will include humor and gags for adult audience appreciation, too. The series will be animated instead of the video game’s traditional pen-and-paper methods because that would take far too long to complete. But it will still feature hand-drawn characters and movement, as well. The series is expected to be released in 2021.

Netflix announced that they had started to produce an animated series of Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness in September 2020. They also released a teaser along with their announcement. The upcoming game adaptation series will be following Resident Evil 2 protagonists Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, as much as we know. Also, there’s a high expectation for other fan-favorites from the games will be included as well. The horror series with a sci-fi twist will be coming in 2021 on Netflix.

Cake and Rovio Entertainment announced Angry Birds: Summer Madness in March 2020 and they have been developing the upcoming animated series for Netflix since then. It will be a game adaptation series of Angry Birds, obviously, providing a fresh look to it. The new animated series is expected to release on Netflix in 2021. Official logline down here,

“The 40 x 11-minute episode series sees much-loved birds Red, Bomb, and Chuck, as well as a cast of brand new feathered friends, as tween birds at summer camp under the questionable guidance of their counselor Mighty Eagle. Explosive antics, improbable pranks, and crazy summertime adventures see the birds pushing boundaries and breaking all the rules while fending off the brash and obnoxious Pigs on the other side of the lake, who seem hell-bent on causing as much mayhem as possible!”

Netflix has popped up this game adaptation suddenly and surprised everyone recently, for sure. It announced the upcoming anime series Dota: Dragon’s Blood with this statement:

“The sweeping fantasy series tells the story of Davion, a renowned Dragon Knight devoted to wiping the scourge from the face of the world. Following encounters with a powerful, ancient eldwurm as well as the noble Princess Mirana on a secret mission of her own, Davion becomes embroiled in events much larger than he could have ever imagined.”

DOTA: Dragon’s Blood‘ will release on Netflix on March 25, 2021.

The iconic spy thriller of Tom Clancy is also on its way to Netflix as a game adaptation form of an animated series. John Wick is the writer of the upcoming series while Derek Kolstad is leading the development. The series is expected to release for two seasons with 16-episode in each on Netflix in 2021 or 2022. There is unfortunately not much known besides.

This game adaptation will be presented as 3D animated series. It will follow the adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog while aiming at kids around the age of 11 along with legacy Sonic fans. The series is co-produced by Netflix Animation, Sega of America, WildBrain Studios, and Man of Action Entertainment and is scheduled to premiere in 2022.

The Division will arrive at Netflix as another game adaptation movie of Tom Clancy. Deadpool 2‘s David Leitch is the director of the upcoming movie with the starring of Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain. The movie is expected to land on Netflix in 2022. The Division shares the same basic story with its video game. Here is the official synopsis,

“In the near future, a devastating virus is released upon the citizens of New York City on Black Friday. The virus, spread through paper money, kills millions within the city, and what little remains of society have descended into chaos. A highly trained group of operatives are tasked with going into New York City and saving any potential survivors.”

Cyberpunk 2077 was CD Projekt Red’s highly-anticipated game from 2012 until its release in 2020. And now, CDPR has also made a deal with Dark Horse Comics for comic-book game adaptations and with Netflix for an animated series, as well. It’s also announced recently that Edgerunners will be a 10-episode limited animated series by Studio Trigger development. It won’t be overlapping with the game, Cyberpunk 2077, in any major way except being set in the same Night City and will its own characters, too. The limited adaptation series is expected to be released in 2022.

Official synopsis Edgerunners:

“The story will follow street kid trying to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future. Having everything to lose, he chooses to stay alive by becoming an edgerunner – a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk”.

Ubisoft announced Assassin’s Creed as a live-action game adaptation of the franchise, in October 2020. But there is actually not much we know except it will be on Netflix, and Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik will serve as executive producers of the series. The series still in early development so it might last a little longer for us to hear more about it. It is expected to air in 2022 or 2023.

Resident Evil is an upcoming live-action game adaptation series based on the Capcom franchise of the same name. Supernatural producer Andrew Dabb is also creating the series. On the other hand, Resident Evil doesn’t also seem to follow its game’s franchise. It will have its own story and characters as well. It is expected to be released in 2022, at the most.
