Netflix’s The Crown is the only series that can unite royalists and casual onlookers by the gripping dramatization of Queen Elizabeth II‘s decades-spanning reign. The Crown has been approaching sometimes in contentious ways to decades of the royals’ history since multiple seasons. After the fourth season of the series, we have been waiting eagerly to see what’s coming ahead for us. So we gathered everything we know about The Crown so far for you, including the cast of season 5, its release date, and season 4 recap.

Young actress Emma Corrin’s gliding gracefully as Princess Diana was the real highlighting force in the fourth season. We met Princess Diana as a teenager and watched her journey from Earl’s Court to the future king’s wife-to-be. But what after then? Since it’s a historical drama, it doesn’t usually come so hard to assume things. On the other hand, there are also Netflix’s numerous casting announcements as well. So let’s dive into summaries we made for you.

The Crown season 4 takes place in 1977 actually but the first episode approaches the election of Margaret Thatcher in 1979. To focus the show’s entry point into the ongoing troubles in Nothern Ireland, the series also shows us the murder of Lord Mountbatten in the meantime. Also, we start to witness working-class struggles, the dissolution of Apartheid, and Diana’s influence on the public as well.

In the progress, The Queen also shined her feature bride, Princess Diana. So the royal family started to pressure Charles to marry Diana after she has passed The Balmoral Test with flying colors.

On the other hand, even if The Queen and Thatcher also started to build their relationships on kind grounds, Maggie’s rules slowly neutralize them over the course of the season as they got more ruthless. So the couple put a dignified end to their relationship with mutual respect for the traits they share.

During the season, the Queen watched Thatcher’s weakness when it came to her children, especially her son Mark. She also has cited him as her favorite, too. So after what she has learned, The Queen decides to reconnect with her own children. She sees and understands in that journey that they all carry their own indiscretions, emotional baggage, and personal struggles as well.

The Crown season 4 ended with Christmas at Balmoral Castle and Thatcher’s resignation. In the meanwhile, The Queen and Prince Philip got sick of Charles and Diana’s marriage complaints. Philip chose to dive into a darker path despite the warnings of Diana about the consequences she will face if her marriage fails, while the Queen was urging Charles to his royal duty.

The Crown season 4 wrapped up in 1990 with the resignation of an unpopular Thatcher and a particularly frosty Christmas at Balmoral Castle. During the festivities, both The Queen and Prince Philip tire of Charles and Diana’s marriage complaints. While the Queen simply and coldly urged Charles to focus on his royal duty, Philip turned a darker corner, with a quiet warning of the consequences Diana will face if her marriage fails.

After Thatcher was gone and Charles and Diana’s were unhappy with their union, we will probably go forward right into the 1990s. It was also confirmed that the Crown will end on the sixth and final season which set to conclude in the early 2000s. Showrunner Peter Morgan said earlier that “season six will not bring us any closer to present-day. It will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.”   Season 5 doesn’t have an official plotline yet. But we can assume what might happen by basing on the real-life royal events for now at least.

We know that 1992 was a rough year for the royal family. So we witnessed two royal marriages’ breakdowns, which Prince Andrew’s separation from Sarah Ferguson and the other is Princess Anne’s divorce from her husband Captain Mark Phillips. We also get a chance to glance at Anne’s struggles which will probably have an important role in season 5.

On the other hand, we will of course continue to see Charles and Diana’s relationship where we left off. We could actually make guesses by the book which author Andrew Morton released in 1992, Diana: Her True Story but the rest of the royal family didn’t receive well the book. So it’s uncertain whether it will be involved in next season somehow or not.

Annus horribilis and a tragic death

To conclude 1992, they might handle the fiery of Windsor Castle, which burned for around 15 hours and caused minor injuries to staff back then. The Queen called it “annus horribilis” in a famous speech of hers, so it might be a great material to use for the writers. And in the 1990s, there are also some scandals inside the British Government such as John Major’s 1993 ‘Back To Basics’ campaign. It was designed to encourage traditional familial values but caused scandals inside of the Conservative Party.

The Crown may also be able to take some juicy events out from the affair of the Arms to Iraq. John Major got really bad reactions for the government-approved weapon sales to Iraq, so it led to Tony Blair’s winning election in 1997.

In the end, the most confronted issue of The Crown season 5 will be the breakdown of Charles and Diana’s marriage for sure. They had divorced in 1996 just before her tragic death in 1997. So it seems there will absolutely be lots of drama and we will all feel the effect left on the world of Diana’s death. Start to get your tissues and eyes ready already i suggest.

And there will be many more names, which haven’t confirmed just yet. The fifth season will have lots of goodbyes and welcomes. It’s because the aging royal family will be entering the 1990s, naturally. While saying goodbye to Olivia Colman, we will welcome Imelda Staunton to take over Queen Elizabeth II’s role. On the other side, Tobias Menzies will be leaving to allow Jonathan Pryce to take over Prince Philip.

They have announced earlier back in July 2020 that filming wouldn’t start until the 21st of June 2021 and the release would be in 2022 already. We are waiting longer than usual for The Crown’s season 5 but the show had planned to take a break long ago as they announced.

So there is still a long way to go for us till we unite with the series sadly.
