Vikings: Valhalla – Cast, Trailer, Synopsis, Release Date

Vikings: Valhalla is an English historic drama series created by Jeb Stuart. The series is a sequel to History TV’s Vikings. The show follows Leif Erikson, Freydis Eriksdotter, and Harald Hardrada, who belong to the two conflicting groups: the Christians and the Pagans. Therefore, the series brings to life the story of the end of the glorious Viking age. It will also cover the fabled battle of Stamford Bridge.

The series is set about 100 years after the events of History TV’s Vikings. Thus, one may not find striking similarities between the shows. However, this series takes the story further. That said, you will definitely find some references to the original show.

Vikings Valhalla on Netflix

Vikings: Valhalla takes forward the story that began with History TV’s phenomenal period drama. It is not always that you see a network making a sequel to another network’s show. But we know Netflix does things differently; Lucifer is a great example of this. After Lucifer was cancelled, the streaming giant picked it up and commissioned further seasons due to fan demands.

Likewise, Netflix going forward with this project proves the potential of the series and the love it has among the fans. At present, we know that the streaming giant ordered 24 episodes. Thus, show creators have planned 3 seasons to be down these episodes.

Netflix released the first season of the series on February 25, 2022.

As per the reports, Vikings: Valhalla Season 2 production was already completed in November 2021. Currently, the pre-production for the third season is underway.

Vikings: Valhalla Season 1

The first-ever season of the Netflix show dropped on February 25, 2022. There are eight episodes in the first season with sixteen more to come in the following seasons. It debuted with impressive ratings, scoring a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans also have been raving about the show.

Production of Vikings: Valhalla

The Netflix show became a ray of hope after the end of the original History TV series in 2019. Furthermore, November 2019 marked the official announcement for Vikings: Valhalla. After a long-drawn casting period, at last the filming began in October 2020 at Ashford Studios. Later, some of the crew members tested positive for Covid-19, leading to temporary suspension of the shoot. However, filming resumed a few days later when the crew realized they had gotten false positives.

Aside from Ashford Studios, where the previous Vikings show was also filmed, Vikings: Valhalla had exterior locations as well. These locations were spread across Ireland. A few scenes were shot near the Wicklow Mountains. Meanwhile, some areas in Dublin and Poulaphouca Reservoir were also chosen locations for the show’s production.

What is Vikings: Valhalla about?

As mentioned earlier, the Netflix show is set 100 years after the incidents of the original show. In the new show, we meet the characters of Leif Erikson, Freydis Eriksdotter, and Harald Hardrada. Leif and Freydis are siblings and have arrived at the coast of England from Greenland. Consequently, the series captures the rising tension between the English monarchy and the Vikings.

Moreover, it brings to light the internal conflict of Vikings based on their beliefs. Thus, as the show progresses, we will meet more characters with their own agendas. While most of these characters are based on real-life individuals, the show is admittedly a fictionalized version. Therefore, you will find significant differences between actual incidents and people and the show’s characters and storyline.

Is the plot of the new series the same as Vikings?

Vikings: Valhalla is a sequel to the original Vikings show that aired on History TV. However, it is set a century after the events of the previous show. Thus, the plot of the show will be a completely different one. Nonetheless, fans may find some similar themes between the shows. In essence, the new show starts at the end of the Vikings era.

Cast: About the Main Characters

The central characters of the entire story are Leif Erikson, Freydis Eriksdotter, and Harald Hardrada. The first two are siblings and have landed on the coast of England from Greenland in search of a better life. In contrast, Harald is a rather ambitious leader and wishes to take revenge on the English.

Later, the trio finds themselves amidst a religious conflict between the two groups of Vikings, the Christians, and the Pagans. Meanwhile, Harald and Freydis develop romantic feelings for each other. Thus, they find themselves in an awkward situation, where they can’t be together because they belong to different camps. Other central characters include King Canute, Olaf Haraldsson, Emma of Normandy, Earl Godwin, Prince Edmund, and Jarl Haakon. During the course of the Netflix series, all these characters clash for their own beliefs.

Vikings: Valhalla Season 2

As per many sources, the filming for Vikings: Valhalla Season 2 was completed in November 2021. Hence, we are hoping to get our hands on the next season of the historical drama as soon as possible. The second season will likely have eight episodes like the first one, given how the showrunners have divided 24 episodes into three seasons. We can also expect that season 2 will have visceral and intense storytelling similar to season 1.

While season 1 witnessed the death of a few nefarious characters, we can expect season 2 returning with many of the main players of the show.
