Bridgerton: Synopsis, Cast, Release Date, Trailer, Awards

Bridgerton is an American period drama created by Chris Van Dusen and produced by Shonda Rhimes. It is based on the novel written by Julia Quinn, which tells the story of London of the Regency era. The series chiefly focuses on the season when debutantes present themselves in order to secure a worthy match for their marriage. And the primary focus of the first season of the show is Daphne Bridgerton.

The series is Shonda Rhimes’ first-ever scripted creation for Netflix. The series itself is a great success and sits at the second spot on the list of most-streamed shows on Netflix.

Bridgerton on Netflix

Bridgerton follows the charming children of the Bridgerton family: Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory, and Hyacinth. All these beautiful kids are on their way to finding love for themselves, while friends and foes walk among them all alike. The first season chiefly focuses on the love-life of the most beautiful and eligible of the Bridgerton girls, Daphne Bridgerton. Many wonder how old Daphne is in Bridgerton. Well, Daphne is actually 21 years old during the events of season 1.

An omnipresent voice guides the viewers through the complicacies of the London ton. The voice calls herself Lady Whistledown, who is intriguing enough to have even the Queen ponder about her ideas and words she wrote. The Netflix show is set in an alternate history. Hence, we see a rather interesting integration of races on the show. Many also wonder what year Bridgerton is set in. And the answer is 1813, which places the show right in the age of Regency.

Bridgerton Books

Julia Quinn is famous for her romantic historical novels. Hence, it comes as no surprise that one of her most successful novel series serves as source material for a popular Netflix series. The Harvard history graduate is truly one of the best contemporary writers when it comes to the historical and romantic genre. Her Bridgerton series of books fuel the Netflix original series. If followed as it is, we will have at least 8 more seasons for Bridgerton.

If you are someone who wishes to read the books, here are the Bridgerton books in order:

  • The Duke and I (2000)
  • The Viscount Who Loved Me (2000)
  • An Offer From a Gentleman (2001)
  • Romancing Mister Bridgerton (2002)
  • To Sir Phillip, With Love (2003)
  • When He Was Wicked (2004)
  • It’s In His Kiss (2005)
  • On the Way to the Wedding (2006)
  • The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After (2013)

Bridgerton Season 2 in 2022

The first season of the series followed the novel, The Duke and I. Hence, Bridgerton season 2 will bring the second novel to life, i.e., The Viscount Who Loved Me. This means that we will see the love life of Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma in the second season of the American drama series. In the books, the name of Anthony’s love interest is Kate Sheffield, which has been changed for the show.

The release date for Bridgerton season 2 is March 25, 2022. The summer of 2022 is going to be fairly pleasant. Moreover, we can expect seasons 3 and 4 in the subsequent years as Netflix gave a green light for two more seasons after season 2 in April 2021.

The production team of Bridgerton

Netflix first shared the news about a Shonda Rhimes production based on Julia Quinn’s best-selling novels in 2018. Chris Van Dusen serves as the showrunner for the series. “I think [period shows] are considered a bit traditional and conservative. With Bridgerton, I wanted to take everything I loved about a period show and turn it into something fresh, topical, and relatable,” said Van Dusen in a ShondaLand article. However, Van Dusen will not be leading the show in its 3rd and 4th seasons, as Jess Brownell will take over the reins.

Also among the crew of the show is Kris Bowers, who composed the music. When talking about the filming of the first season of Bridgerton, it was completed in late February 2020. The team primarily shot the entire show in London and Bath. A few street shots were taken in York and Chatham as well. The Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens from season 1 no longer remained intact, and the production team recreated it for Lady Danbury’s ball.

Bridgerton best episodes

Although every single episode of the series is amazing, these of course are the 2 that stand out the most.

Episode 5: The Duke and I

The episode where Daphne and Simon try to get a marriage license to hide their garden makeout. And in that process, Simon opens up about his feelings for her. After a little friction from the queen’s side, they do finally get the marriage license and soon set off on their honeymoon. There we see Daphne and Simon confess their love for one another, and it was truly the most beautiful scene of the show.

Episode 8: After The Rain

Of course, the finale is one of the best episodes in the series. We see the young Basset couple together welcoming their son. However, things didn’t end well for the other characters of the show. We hope that changes as we step into the second season of Bridgerton.

Awards and Recognition for Bridgerton

Bridgerton has won a number of awards for its brilliance. Below are some of them:

The show won the award for Top Television Program at AFI Awards 2021.

Marc Pilcher, Lynda J. Pearce, Adam James Phillips, and Tania Couper won the award for Best Television Series, Limited or Miniseries or New Media Series – Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling at The Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards 2021.

The story behind the making of Bridgerton

When Julia Quinn came to know that Shonda Rhimes was interested in adapting her books for a show, she fell off of her chair.
