If mingling with Hollywood big shots is appealing, becoming an Oscar seat filler must seem like a dream opportunity. But it is not a case of completing a form. For the Oscars, seat fillers have strong connections in most cases. Most seat fillers work for ABC, and many work for the Academy, and many have family working for them, too. This exclusivity keeps the job reserved for Hollywood insiders.

Another way to secure the role involves working for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). It is a firm responsible for Oscar voting logistics. Their staff occasionally receive passes to join as seat fillers. For other award shows, websites like Seatfillers and More or Audiences Unlimited allow regular people to apply. Applicants are usually required to submit resumes, photos, and social media profiles to stand a chance of being selected.
Think the Oscars gig sounds glamorous? Here is a look at what seat fillers actually get in return!
How much money do Oscar seat fillers get?
Despite the glory and glitz of the Oscars, seat fillers receive no pay-for-service. In 2024, it was confirmed that the position continues to not receive pay, with seat fillers volunteering for a chance to serve and experience. That leaves guests with expenses for transportation and attire. Guests pay an average of $800 for the evening, including grooming service and attire. For those who do not want to spend much money, there are several other ways to be present at the Oscars. As for many, it is an investment in a firsthand Hollywood encounter.

At most other award shows, interestingly, seat fillers receive payment for working for them. Events such as MTV Movie Awards can range anywhere between $100 and $200 per performance, and it is location and duration-dependent. Most seat fillers, however, appreciate getting to go for the thrill and not for payment. After all, getting to sit with an A-lister such as Nicole Kidman is worth a lot for many.
