The countdown to the 97th Academy Awards has picked up pace and within a day or so, the world would be well aware of who gets to call themselves Oscar-winner for a lifetime. Dubbed the most prestigious honor in all of Hollywood’s award season, an Oscar is equivalent to writing one’s name in the stars once and for all. And right before entering the big weekend, the most Oscar-nominated flick of this year, Netflix’s Emilia Pérez just got the heart-warmers and a heartbreaker at the same time, leaving fans completely frustrated following the French equivalent of the Academy Awards.
It is only a matter of time before A-listers of the industry run to their vanity vans to practice their best acceptance speech for the Academy Awards. But Netflix’s Emilia Pérez already had the crew running for fireworks and some tissues simultaneously at the 2025 César Awards. Jacques Audiard’s musical, also an Oscar contender this year, took home multiple honors, including Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, Best Original Music, and the most impressive one, Best Film.

Heartbreaks, however, do not exempt the winners. Despite its record-shattering performance at the French equivalent of the Oscars, the star of the show, Karla Sofía Gascón, lost the Best Actress trophy to Hafsia Herzi, who bagged the accolade for Stéphane Demoustier’s drama, Borgo. Though this was Gascón’s first public appearance since the controversy surrounding her resurfaced tweets, the night turned out not too well for her.
As the word spread across the Internet, it was not the snub that had fans frustrated but surprisingly, the Best Film win.
Emilia Pérez’s César Awards leaves fans questioning in fury ahead of the 2025 Oscars
From the very get-go, Emilia Pérez created a buzz so convincing that there was no way out but for it to touchdown at the 2025 Academy Awards. And when it did, it did so with a whopping total of 13 nominations, outshining each and every contender in the running this year. Yet, as the Oscars day inches close, the Netflix film’s César Awards’ success story has left fans utterly furious.
Many fans dubbed Emilia Pérez as undeserving of the Best Film honor. While the debate can go on which film in the running truly deserves the Oscar-edition of Best Picture, fans are far from sold in the French version.

Meanwhile, a few folks fired unrelenting shots at the creators for painting a not-so-celebratory representation of Mexico. Sure, some were over the moon, acknowledging the César Awards showdown as the early trumpet call of what will go down at the Oscars. However, the negativity in the air does not look too good for Emilia Pérez, since fans are not exactly bracing for a sweep but cinematic justice from their perspective.
