The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has reportedly been on the search for the Oscar’s new streaming home since its negotiations with Disney's ABC lapsed without a new agreement, as per people familiar with the matter. Though their bond is strong, Disney having been home to Oscars for nearly 5 decades, may see an end to their agreement by 2028. However, considering Disney refuses to increase the size of the deal, and the Academy does, the shift could be inevitable. While Netflix is surely on the cards, the Academy has shown interest in streaming counterparts as well.

According to people familiar with the issue, The Academy’s negotiations with Disney have lapsed without a new agreement. Though their bond is strong, Disney having been home to Oscars for nearly 5 decades, may see an end to their agreement by 2028. However, considering Disney refuses to increase the size of the deal, and the Academy does, the move could be inevitable. While Netflix is surely on the cards, the Academy has shown interest in streaming counterparts as well.
The Academy is still warming up for negotiations with potential partners, though it has already had a casual chat, Netflix included. But with other suitors in the mix, nothing is set in stone just yet. And while this remains the most-watched awards show in the US, the real challenge will be proving its power Stateside, especially after its viewership took a blockbuster-sized tumble, more than 60% from its peak.
As for now and through 2028, Disney’s ABC will air the Oscars, but post that? Netflix could very well get a thumbs-up ahead. That said, has Netflix taken a step ahead in the matter?
What does Netflix have to say about the Academy Awards’ next streaming home?
According to Bloomberg’s report, The Academy is on the lookout for a substantial pay increase, and simultaneously, wants to increase the audience after the dip in recent years. Netflix and Amazon have the largest global audience, and consequently, have the resources to pay a greater licensing fee. Moreover, Netflix and Amazon both have hosted award shows, and Ted Sarandos, the former’s co-chief executive officer is also on the board of the Academy’s Los Angeles Museum.

Netflix, however, would only be interested in the deal if it allows more programming leveraging the Academy’s library of footage. Considering it has been largely against the idea of theatrical releases with its insistence on streaming debuts, this baggage could be a deal-breaker for the two. As a result, it could circle back to Disney again, given they still offer a broadcast network and a global streaming outlet. But it remains to be seen how the Oscars unfold in the years to come.
