Selena Gomez, a multi-hyphenate in show business, has been in the spotlight since she was a child. Anyone who grew up watching the Disney Channel knows a thing or two about the actress's acting chops. Since then, Gomez has delivered many notable works in the film industry and even made history by becoming the second Latina in Emmy Award history to be among the producing nominees for a comedy series at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards. Now, the only missing jewel in her crown, an Oscar, is seemingly within her reach as well.

Selena Gomez could be eyeing her first-ever Academy Award with her recent standout acting performance.

Selena Gomez recently added another movie to her resume with the star-studded musical crime comedy, Emilia Pérez. Gomez, who plays the titular character’s wife in the movie, has delivered some “standout moments” in the show, especially with the song 'El Camino', as has been highlighted by Variety. Given this, and considering the Oscars’ history of nominating two supporting actresses from the same project, roughly 33% of the time, Gomez might just be in the running for an Academy nod.

Aside from Gomez, Zoe Saldana could either campaign as the lead or slide into the supporting actress category at the Oscars. Back in May, Emilia Pérez received a nine-minute standing ovation at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Amid the roaring applause, Gomez, moved by the heartfelt reception, was seen wiping away her tears. The film also won several awards at the festival, and the songstress took home a Best Actress award. Following the Cannes debut, the 'Who Says' singer opened up about her journey working on the film.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in May, Selena Gomez admitted that she was “very nervous” about taking on Emilia Pérez because it was a project unlike any she had previously attempted, even though she had auditioned for musicals in the past. Despite her smaller role in the Spanish-language film, the part was still “big and special” to Gomez. “I feel so lucky that I was able to be a part of it,” said the 32-year-old.

Gomez also recalled the audition process, where she felt she went a little bit over the top. However, it remains to be seen whether Emilia Pérez's Oscars campaign will pan out the way Netflix and industry insiders are predicting. The film’s response and its journey through the awards circuit, with an eye on the 97th Academy Awards, will ultimately influence the film’s fate and Gomez’s chances of Oscar acclaim.
