The Oscars may have the most iconic red carpet in the world. However, the Academy was not the one who first introduced the idea of using the rugs in such a way. In ancient Greece, crimson-hued paths were set out for gods and royalty. It was people’s way of giving them the respect and honor that they deserved. The concept was also seen in medieval Europe.

That was when the carpets were used to welcome guests and monarchs during ceremonial events like coronations. However, it was not until 1902 that the ideology was introduced into theatrical events. Even after all of that, it took another 20 years for the Oscars to accept the concept for themselves.
