Oscar Awards 2025 Hit a 16-Year-Low as a Surprising Stat Reveals Major Concern

The alleged dwindling relevance of cinema became a subject of concern during the pandemic itself; as much as everyone, the movie-making business also took a hit, with its powerhouse, that theaters being shut down. However, movies such as Oppenheimer and Barbie were fortunately able to bring the magic back to the big screens. While the years following the releases did their best to maintain the streak, it seems, especially considering the Oscar 2025 data, that 2024 failed to fulfill this responsibility. 

Despite being the rearing ground of one of Marvel's biggest releases in years and witnessing one of the most popular young adult books get adapted, 2024 seems to have left the Oscar glass more than half empty in quantity.

Despite the ceaseless prattle in Tinseltown about spectacles like Wicked and a summer stuffed with blockbusters, the Academy has seen fit to grace the audiences with a mere thirty-five feature nominees and a modest fifteen short films. Not since 2009 has the pool of contenders been this shallow. And yet, in true Hollywood fashion, the scarcity has done nothing to dilute the drama of the competition, which is as sharp as ever and twice as ruthless.

With pop stars like Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez at the forefront, there was a heightened interest in the Oscar nominees this year. This was further escalated as Grande actually bagged an Oscar nomination, whereas Gomez, despite several predictions, could not secure the bag.

Apart from the pop star drama, this year's Oscars have also not been backed away from being high on drama.

Despite the news of Oscars 2025, having a low number of movie nominees, the drama that they have brought with them is enough to make up for the lack of numbers. This is especially true for Dune: Part Two, that secured a Best Picture nomination, however, leaving its director, Denis Villeneuve, to taste the dust quite literally.

This massive snub has earned a bold reaction not just from the audience but also from Marvel star Josh Brolin, as he stated that he might just have to quit acting. If Brolin does stick to his words, then the Oscar 2025 awards have not just raked in a lesser number of movie nominees but also caused permanent damage for the coming years.
