Cynthia Erivo Stresses on Jon M. Chu’s Brilliance With Disappointment Over Major Oscar Snub for ‘Wicked'
The 2025 Oscar nominations are in, and as always, with celebration, there is also a fair share of complaints about the snubs. Since the Oscars began, someone has always been overlooked, ignored, passed over, or just flat-out disregarded. And these snubs have turned into an annual debate among movie lovers. This year, one of the biggest snubs at the Oscars is Jon M. Chu, who directed the massively successful Wicked.
Cynthia Erivo, who did earn her own nod for the film, recently shared her frustration over the Academy’s decision to snub her director.

Wicked earned a whopping 10 Oscar nominations this Thursday morning, but the Best Director nod for Jon M. Chu was not one of them. Actress Cynthia Erivo recently chatted with Variety about the snub, saying, “I wish people understood just how much work has to go into creating a big, giant behemoth like Wicked.” She went on to explain that none of it would have been possible without Chu’s vision. Erivo also emphasized how much Chu brought to the table to make Wicked a standout, especially this awards season.
Erivo described Chu as the “big brother and the dad”, who was the first one to reach out to her when her own Oscar nomination was announced. Erivo landed a Best Actress nomination, and Ariana Grande got a nod for Best Supporting Actress, despite her previous Golden Globes snub. The film is also up for Best Picture, Film Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, Original Score, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound, and Visual Effects. But despite all that Oscar love, the team was reportedly heartbroken when they found out Chu got snubbed.
Michelle Yeoh, who plays Madame Morrible, recently said the cast was "crying” over the fact that their director did not make the cut.

Michelle Yeoh recently visited The View, where Joy Behar asked if she had spoken to her fellow Wicked cast members after the film scored 10 Oscar nominations earlier that morning. “Yes! We’re all crying for joy,” said Yeoh with a smile, before adding, “But, we must say we are also crying because Jon M. Chu, Alice Brooks — our DP — were not nominated”.

Ana Navarro, one of the co-hosts, then pointed out that this was the second time they have passed over Jon Chu, bringing up his earlier snub for In the Heights. Yeoh quickly agreed, saying, “Yes, I agree with you”. Even Jon M. Chu himself addressed the snub, but he did it with no hard feelings. The director mentioned he is still honored that the film is nominated for Best Picture. Now, the only thing left to do is see how many Oscars Wicked walks away with on March 2nd.
