This year, at the Golden Globes, as the Best Supporting Actress category was announced, many fans in the room were sure Ariana Grande’s name would be called for the honor. But, the night took a surprising turn and Zoe Saldaña walked away with the trophy for her role in Emilia Pérez. While Grande’s fans were disappointed, understandably so, her performance in Wicked and its impact is still keeping the Arianators hopeful. Many are now pinning their hopes on her winning her first Oscar. But is it really possible for her to take home the coveted statue?

Here is a breakdown of whether Ariana Grande has what it takes to win her first Oscar, even after missing out at the Golden Globes.

The wait for the Oscar nominations has felt especially long this year because of the devastating LA wildfires. But now, as the announcements are finally drawing closer, Ariana Grande is looking like one of the frontrunners for Best Supporting Actress at the 2025 Oscars. So far, she has nominations at major awards shows, including the BAFTAs, Critics' Choice Movie Awards, and SAG Awards. While Grande has yet to win any major acting awards, she currently holds the second-best odds to win the Oscar, with +400 betting odds, according to DraftKings.

The road to Oscar glory, however, is not exactly that smooth for Grande, as Zoe Saldaña, her biggest competitor, is leading the pack with odds of -700 this time. Saldaña’s recent Golden Globes win has only strengthened her position as the favorite to win Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards. Still, there is plenty of time for Grande to make a case for herself as the frontrunner. But whether it is Grande or Saldaña who leads the Oscars race, one thing is for sure—another popular contender might end up getting sidelined—Selena Gomez.

Many fans initially predicted that this year’s Oscars would feature a head-to-head battle between Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande for Best Supporting Actress. But that scenario seems less likely by the day.

Is Selena Gomez still in the Oscars race?

Ariana Grande was not the only one to miss out at the Golden Globes—Selena Gomez also lost out on the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in Emilia Pérez. And with her co-star Zoe Saldaña taking home the Globe, it is looking increasingly likely that the MCU star will keep dominating the conversation over Gomez in the race. On top of that, Gomez did not even receive a nomination at the SAG Awards for the Supporting Actress category, which further dims her chances.

Considering all this, it is looking tough for Selena Gomez to beat the odds and overtake both Grande and her Emilia Pérez co-star. After all, since the SAG Awards began in 1995, only eight years have seen a different winner for Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars. And if Grande wins the SAG, the clear competition at the Oscars will be between her and Zoe Saldaña.
