The early life of Colin Kaepernick
DuVernay explains, “With his act of protest, Colin Kaepernick ignited a national conversation about race and justice with far-reaching consequences for football, culture and for him, personally… Colin’s story has much to say about identity, sports, and the enduring spirit of protest and resilience. I couldn’t be happier than to tell this story with the team at Netflix.”
Colin Kaepernick, in 2016, was a QB for the San Francisco 49ers, protested during the national anthem by kneeling because of police brutality and racial inequality, and systematic oppression. He kneeled the whole season during the national anthem. The protest received a lot of mixed reactions from the general public. He left the 49ers, became a free player, and remained unsigned for a long time. He filed against NFL and has played none NFL. Kaepernick’s protest became back on track when George Floyd died from police brutality and racism. He remained a free player and remain unsigned. Kaepernick claims the show is an expansion of his activism. He added, “Too often we see race and Black stories portrayed through a white lens… We seek to give a new perspective on the different realities that Black people face. We explore the racial conflicts I faced as an adopted black man in a white community during my high school years. It’s an honor to bring these stories to life in collaboration with Ava for the world to see.”
