Gascón was supposed to fly from Spain to Los Angeles for the crucial second phase of the Oscars campaign. Her plans included attending major events, like the Critics Choice Awards. But now, it seems she will not be showing up to any of them. Sources say Netflix is no longer picking up the tab for her travel to those awards shows or covering her styling for appearances.

The controversy started when some old, problematic social media posts from Gascón resurfaced, paired with her violation of one of the Oscars’ most important rules. And now, the fallout is being felt across the campaign. 

The controversy surrounding Karla Sofía Gascón first began when she alleged that Fernanda Torres, also an Oscar nominee, and her team were behind the spread of disparaging comments about her and Emilia Pérez. Her claims breached an Academy regulation before the ceremony. Journalist Sarah Hagi then sparked further controversy by posting screenshots of Gascón’s old social media activity.

Karla Sofía Gascón’s posts caused an uproar. Fans quickly called her out for Islamophobia and bigotry. Gascón also criticized the direction of the Oscars. After the backlash, the actress decided to deactivate her X account and later apologized for the posts. Still, despite everything that has happened, Gascón has made it clear that she has no plans to leave the Oscar race and intends to stay in it all the way to the finish.
