The fifth installment of Robert Rodriguez’s Spy Kids is within spitting distance. The upcoming American action comedy film starring Zachary Levi and Gina Rodriguez will be a reboot movie coming soon on Netflix, named Spy Kids: Armageddon. It has garnered a mixed reaction from the fans. Those who grew up watching the original set of films had their own reservations about the project. And the recent trailer release made them even more skeptical about the franchise’s ability to meet the expectations of an entire generation.  

Netflix recently dropped the trailer of the new Spy Kids movie, which will release on 22 September. In a matter of hours, the trailer attracted over a million views and a flood of responses. Following the release of the first look of Spy Kids: Armageddon, its trailer has further ignited frustration on social media sites. From what it seems, the movie is going to be a silly family adventure with a video game-driven plot.

Everly Carganilla and Connor Esterson, playing the “Spy Kids” set out on a thrilling adventure after discovering their parents are undercover spies. As per the trailer, they accidentally breathe life into video game characters, resulting in the disappearance of their parents. Now the new generation of Spy kids must learn from their parents’ pre-recorded instructions on how to become a spy and rescue them. The kids then will team up with their parents to battle a video game developer and save the world.

Fans have their sentiments attached to the beloved franchise of Spy Kids. Upon catching a glimpse of the trailer, they could tell that the movie would be “disastrous”. And they did not refrain from echoing their disappointment in their responses. While some questioned the need to come up with a reboot, others were worried about how the fresh ensemble would live up to the legacy of the original leads. 

Amid the flood of negativity, there were a few comments that showed genuine enthusiasm for the upcoming release. However, they had their own conditions and called for special appearances from the OG cast. 

Yet, a large portion of netizens shared the mutual sentiment towards boycotting the movie. They were apprehensive about ruining their nostalgic connection attached to the franchise.

As the OTT giant is all set to revive a plethora of forgotten film flops, it needs to instill confidence in the streamers. After the successful adaptation of One Piece, fans have started to place their trust in the streaming platform once again. However, only time will tell whether this new spin on one of the most fan-loved franchises will keep the flame of the original alive.
