The Witcher 4 is teetering on the edge of swords at the moment. It could either pleasantly surprise fans with some unexpected mojo or end up confirming their suspicions about trying to keep the franchise going without its main charm, Henry Cavill. The once buzzworthy series took a hit in popularity and viewership during Season 3 compared to its earlier glory days. Still, it is aiming for a comeback in the next season. But can it really pull it off with the current vibe among fans?

The Witcher's Season 4 was primed to hit the ground running, with filming set to commence by September 2023. However, the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes hogged much of 2023, causing a delay in production for the forthcoming season. According to Redanian Intelligence, pre-production for Season 4 was on the cards for January 2024, with filming not far behind. And in a recent update, the same fan page spilled the beans that it is “only a matter of days until The Witcher S4 starts filming”

The release pattern for The Witcher has been pretty consistent, with the first three seasons arriving two years apart: Season 1 hit screens in 2019, Season 2 followed in 2021, and Season 3 debuted in 2023. With filming for Season 4 set to kick off relatively early in 2024, a late 2025 release seems very likely. However, what typically used to stir up excitement among fans instead met with a lukewarm reception and some disappointment this time.

Fans are not expecting much from The Witcher 4

The Witcher creators are bending over backward to make up for Henry Cavill's absence, be it by roping in familiar faces or aligning the storyline more closely with the original sources. Despite their efforts, fans seem to be losing faith in Lauren Hissrich's vision for the franchise, as evidenced by the reactions to Redanian Intelligence's announcement. Fans flooded the comments with their unmistakable love and longing for Henry Cavill as Geralt.

Many were also convinced that the fourth installment was destined to flop and that it would ultimately spell the end for the franchise altogether.

In the meantime, some had reached a point where they no longer cared about The Witcher

Considering how fans feel, if the transition from Henry Cavill's Geralt to Liam Hemsworth's is not seamless, it might invite even more trolling and erode whatever fanbase is left. Still, it is going to be a while before the installment even graces the screens, for fans to see if Lauren Hissrich can indeed change their minds.
