Will Smith will be remembered for some of the most epic and memorable roles he played throughout his 38-year career. However, he will also be remembered for a cameo he played in a box office flop. Because it’s Valentine’s Week and Smith is back in the news for the infamous Slapgate as the Oscars approach, it’s time to remember an old epic failure film that combines both.

It was released on the occasion of Valentine’s Day in 2014, and he starred in it. The film is Winter’s Tale which the Fresh Prince appears in just one scene. He played Lucifer in this romantic fantasy, which performed well neither commercially nor critically.

The film was directed by Academy Award-winning director Akiva Goldsman, who won it for the best-adapted screenplay for A Beautiful Mind. Winter’s Tale is also an adaptation of Mark Helprin’s novel of the same name. However, this time, Goldsman failed to add the magic to it, which resulted in the biggest box office failures of 2014.

Even the Will Smith cameo could not save Winter’s Tale

Since Goldsman had already won an Oscar for an adaptation, he thought he might be next in line once again. Hence, he picked up 1983’s huge hit ‘Winter’s Tale,’ which was a safe choice for adaptation. The story of the film follows Peter, who is a burglar and is raised by a supernatural demon. To commit robbery, he visits Beverly Penn’s estate. Instead, he develops feelings for Beverly, who is subsequently poisoned.

For the role of Peter, Goldsman chose Irish actor Colin Farrell, who is well known for films like Phone Booth and The Gentleman, while Jessica Brown Findlay played the role of Peter’s love, Beverly. Goldsman even chose Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly, whom he has worked with in The Beautiful Mind. And of course, he brought in the big gun, aka Will Smith.

However, even with a star-studded cast and aesthetic cinematography, and a perfect release date, the film could not perform well. The film was made under a budget of a whopping $75 million but failed to recover even half of it. As per We Got This Covered, the film made a meager $31 million and has an indigent rating of 13% on Rotten Tomatoes.
