One of the strongest connections between two contrasting forces in The Witcher has been the dynamic between Anya Chalotra’s Yennefer and Freya Allan’s Ciri. When Yennefer ‘s seasoned sorceress finesse collided with Ciri’s untamed, emerging powers, their relationship became a dance of heart-warming mentorship. With a mixture of maternal warmth and magical wisdom, the sorceress guided her beloved Ugly One through the labyrinth of her destiny. In the midst of Season 3’s chaos, their bond tightened into a formidable alliance.

Here are some of the cast’s thoughts on the two and possible developments that could transpire between them.

United against the tumultuous currents of their intertwined fates, season 3 culminated with the bond between Yennefer and Ciri stronger than ever. In an interview with Digital Spy from July this year, Anya Chalotra dived into the transformation of Yennefer into a “maternal figure” for Ciri. Apparently, it took the British actress “by surprise” despite all the building up to it.

According to Chalotra, “Ciri sees through” the sorceress’s tough persona and calculating nature. Additionally, she felt that Yennefer may have not been “prepared for what motherhood” could entail despite wanting to become a mother for so long. The “wild journey” so far may have led Yennefer to realize the amount of work she needed to do to prove she “can be trusted”.

As much as she wants to guide Ciri as a mother, Yennefer may be unable to do so.

Yennefer may be helpless when it comes to helping Ciri

In the final sequence of season 3, Ciri entered her rebellious era after joining forces with the Rats, a young group of bandits. Well, Chalotra believes that Ciri’s strength” and its dangers might make Yennefer take a step back. During the interview, she confessed her feelings on it all and how she thinks Yennefer can only provide limited help to Ciri now.

She felt that all the sorceress could do for her precious Ugly One now was “make the world a better place”. Apparently, the Wanderlust actress had made peace with the fact that her character “might not be” the one who pulls Ciri “out of” this rebellious phase. Since only the princess could “pull” herself out of this mess, all she could do now was “wonder how” she would do that.

Another reason Yennefer’s hands may be tied when helping Ciri in season 4 is this.

The future if The Witcher season 4 follows the books

Following an intense showdown at Aretuza at the zenith of the third season, Ciri found herself distanced from her comrades of Yennefer, Geralt, and Jaskier. In the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, what comes next for Yennefer could mean that it would be impossible to reunite with Ciri for a while. After the battle at Aretuza, Yennefer found herself imprisoned in a jade form for over a month.

Upon her liberation, she received an invitation to join the Lodge of Sorceresses, which she initially turned down only to land in Vilgefortz’s clutches. It took Geralt’s intervention, for a rescue mission to materialize. Considering the tumultuous journey the books have laid out for Yennefer, it seems unlikely she will cross paths with Ciri anytime soon.

That is unless the show’s writers intervene and change the storyline.

An alternative turn of events for season 4 of The Witcher

Before season 3 arrived, Freya Allan spoke on how she and Chalotra’s characters had worked so hard to build up the trust between their character’s so far. However, as Ciri enters into a rebellious phase by the end of the season, this trust may be shaken up a bit. So, unlike what Chalorta believed, maybe it is time now for Yennefer to take a more active role in shaping Ciri’s future.

For season 4, it is equally possible that the writers might bring Yennefer into the fold to shower some tough love on the princess to make her come out of her self-destructive arc with the Rats. Considering how much of the Continent’s future rests upon her growth in Season 4, this might be necessary.

When and if this occurs, fans might finally get the one thing they have been waiting to see.

During season 2, Yennefer’s betrayal of Ciri, which almost got the princess killed, came as a shock to many. However, as time went along, her selfless actions and budding entanglement with Henry Cavill’s Geralt became a beacon of hope for audiences. While the White Wolf has not yet fully forgiven the sorceress for the shocking betrayal, Ciri and Yennefer’s growing bond may make him reconsider giving in to

Many believe that these central figures were destined to become a chosen family of sorts. Maybe it is time for Yenner’s complex character to fully transform from her past transgressions and take on the reigns of leading the three into a harmonious life. Since season 3 served up various glimpses into a blissful life that could be for them, maybe season 4 will finally culminate that arc with Liam Hemsworth now in the mix.
