The Hollywood diva, Marilyn Monroe still lives in the hearts and minds of millions to this day. She is still remembered for her famous movies and even more famous photographs, but as they always say “the brighter the star, the bigger the truth.” The latest Netflix documentary uncovers the young woman that was Marilyn Monroe and not the sex icon. It tries to uncover the secrets behind her death, piecing together her life. The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes reveals recordings and tapes that were never heard before. 

4th August 1962 was the worst day for the nation. The nation lost its beloved actress, on a fateful day. Following her death, controversy and rumors abounded. She had several linkups, with the likes of football star, Joe DiMaggio and playwright, Arthur Miller, throughout her career. There were also rumors of her having a fling with President John F. Kennedy. Fans and tabloids started speculating about her mysterious death. Some believed the involvement of FBI, and considered it a murder, even though it was a drug-induced suicide according to the autopsy.

The Netflix trailer opens with the winning smile of the Hollywood actress, and Marilyn Monroe’s voice is heard over the montage of archival footage. We get to know that her case was reopened in 1982, following the controversies surrounding her death that refused to die down years later. The narrator further reveals that information and the tapes were hard to come by. He met a series of dead ends while investigating her death, so he had to start from the beginning to understand her story. And he takes us from the beginning of her journey from growing up in foster homes to becoming a sensation. 

The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe: The Unheard Tapes might showcase her struggle with drugs, mental disorders, childhood poverty, and her broken marriages. Behind that billion-dollar smile, she was a very lonely and insecure woman. She miscarried twice due to her endometriosis. The tapes from people who knew her best might throw some light on the mysterious night of 1962.
