A movie that has made every person romantic or not dream of having love as passionate as the one showcased is Nicholas Sparks’s The Notebook. Starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in lead roles, The Notebook did wonders in the movie industry and for the actors associated with it. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams had one of the most buzzworthy relationships of that time.

This is why when the all-too-perfect couple broke up two years into the relationship. Fans were left scratching their heads.  Despite years having passed, a question that fans just cannot stop asking is why did the two actors break up.

Why did Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams break up?

Was it because Ryan Gosling refused to go shopping on Wednesday? Was it because McAdams liked to text in Papyrus font, fans racked their heads for a reason why such a perfect couple would break up. Ever since the beginning, Gosling and McAdams coming together was written in destiny. In a behind-the-scenes video of The Notebook, producer Mark Johnson revealed how they tested nine other actresses before Rachel McAdams, who were very well known.

Rumors have it that stars like Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson also auditioned for the role. However, no one shared the magnetic chemistry that McAdams shared with Gosling. “She came in, and she just took the role,” Gosling said about his The Notebook co-star.

While the beginning was right out of a fairytale, what unfolded was anything but. Contrary to the dozen of pictures of Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdam almost kissing each other, the actors could not stand each other on the sets of the Nicholas Sparks movie.

However, they eventually started dating. Gosling revealed in his GQ interview that it was mutual. “The only thing I remember is we both went down swingin’, and we called it a draw,” said the actor.

The ex-lovers are still good friends

Even when he did the GQ interview in 2007, a few months after the breakup, he did not have anything bad to say about McAdams. In fact, Gosling said they were way more romantic than the characters in the movie.

Despite their split, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, fortunately, did not become one of those couples who had a public spat. Although they never worked on a movie together again, the two of them are said to share a very good friendship still. As of 2022, Goslin shares two daughters with Eva Mendes, and McAdams has found love in Jamie Linden.
