Shows come and go, but there come times when some stories leave a forever impression on people. The 90s sitcom Friends is one of those that has remained one of the biggest comedy sensations. Despite meeting its end about two decades ago, this series still trends and one might find plenty of clips while scrolling over social media. This gang of six buddies has become a fixture in many living rooms across the globe. Seeing the attention this show gets from all kinds of generations, many would think why it ended when people loved it so much.

Friends signed off in 2004, leaving behind the coffeehouse and Monica’s apartment where these beloved characters used to sit around. At that time, the creators did not reveal the reason they shut down the sitcom that captured the attention of 50 million viewers. But ten years later in 2014, David Crane and Marta Kauffman spoke to Entertainment Weekly about it.

In the Q&A session, the outlet asked them when they decided to close the show. In his response, Kauffman revealed the series was going to end earlier, but they kept on making new seasons. To this, her fellow creator added: “Because of the actors’ contract negotiations, and it seemed as though, “Oh, season 7 is the last season.” Or season 8. Or season 9”. Crane further stressed how they could not “keep stopping and starting and rethinking everything.”

Another reason why David Crane and Marta Kauffman decided to stop after season ten was the age of the characters. The writer noted that they were no longer at the stage where friends were family. Instead, it was time for the characters to start their own family and move on. However, the cast members had different opinions about the longevity of the show.

Lisa Kudrow, who inspired the character of Phoebe’s twin sister Ursula, talked about what actors thought about the closure. In her 2014 interview with the Television Academy, she revealed that some people had made up their minds and wanted to leave. While others were not ready, they considered the show like a part-time job where they made real-life friends and had so much fun.

Well, the show did come to an end despite all the points of view people presented, but the cast members are still friends to this day. They do meet up sometime and wish each other on birthdays and special occasions. Not to mention, all of them have continued to live in the hearts of fans.
