What Is ‘Stranger Things Effect’? Why Does James Cameron Want to Avoid This Netflix Series’ Phenomenon for His Avatar Films?

The supernatural show created by Duffer Brothers is one of the biggest legacies of Netflix. Stranger Things attained meteoric success revolving around the nostalgic 80s in the fictitious Indiana town of Hawkins. One could say that the series garnered a devoted fandom right from the start and viewers didn’t leave it even after the three years delay due to the pandemic.

The wait was worth every second as season 4 became the most viewed English-language show with over 188.19M hours total viewed. While fans went crazy on social media as we saw how this sci-fi drama inspired TikToks, cosplays, and remake videos. But do you know that the show has also influenced the making of James Cameron’s Avatar films? What is the ‘Stranger Things Effect’?

Stranger Things was big casting lesson for James Cameron in Avatar

In a recent feature story with Entertainment Weekly, James Cameron opened up about the future of the Avatar franchise. During the conversation, he revealed that they had already shot scenes for the third and fourth films. According to the Titanic director, it was the right choice because he didn’t want his cast to look older than depicted in the film.

Since he saw in season 4 of Stranger Things how child actors of this multiyear project look older than what the script says. He stated that all the fans love the characters and we do ignore these things because of it but the age difference is clearly visible.

“Otherwise, you get — and I love Stranger Things — but you get the Stranger Things effect where they’re supposed to still be in high school [but] they look like they’re 27,” explained the director.

Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, who plays the character of Tuk, was only 7 years old in the debut film and is 13 now. Similarly, Jack Champion was cast at the age of 12 and has turned 18 this year. So James Cameron might not be able to stop this growth but he captured all the things in required timelines.

Meanwhile, the final season of Stranger Things is set to release at some point in 2024. The tale of this powerful girl played by Millie Bobby Brown will come to an end. However, the creators have promised fans to explore some exciting stories from this whole of mysteries and adventures.
