First things first, there is no movie titled Djinn’s Oblivion on Netflix because the film on Djinn is Three Thousand Years of Longing, whose original soundtrack is called 'A Djinn's Oblivion.' Three Thousand Years of Longing is George Miller’s 2022 fantasy romantic drama based on the 1994 short story by A. S. Byatt, The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye. Although the film was unprofitable, having earned just $20.3 million against a $60 million budget, it received positive reviews about its visuals and performance by critics.

The fantasy film was dedicated to producer Doug Mitchell’s relative, Rena, and Miller’s mother, Angela. As for the plot, Three Thousand Years of Longing follows a djinn, portrayed by Idris Elba, who is conjured from a bottle by a professor, played by Tilda Swinton. The professor finds the ancient bottle on a trip to Istanbul and unleashes a djinn who offers her three wishes. But unlike the wish-giving djinns, this wish-maker comes with a warning before telling the stories of the thousands of years of his existence.

Themes explored by Three Thousand Years of Longing on Netflix

Three Thousand Years of Longing may have earned the critics’ cold shoulder for its narrative structure but hit an all-rounder with its themes. George Miller explored the tropes of longing and desire, freedom and servitude, and the layered nuances that come with a wish-making machine to pinch reality in a reel flavor. The film premiered at the 75th Cannes Film Festival in 2022.

It saw a theatrical release in the US and Australia later that year. Although the movie is not a Netflix original, it is an addition to the streamer’s ever-expansive content catalog and sure deserves a fantasy shot for the lover of that genre. While a good deal may assume the narrative structure might invite fallacy, the film's in-frame stories within the larger story actually help the contrasting elements paint a bigger picture for the audience.
