When Ozark’s last batch of episodes airs later this month, things might not be so bad for the Byrde family. On Friday, series actor Jason Bateman appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, where he and host Jimmy Fallon addressed what fans of the Emmy-winning Netflix drama should expect.
When Fallon wondered if the grim story might have a happy conclusion, Bateman stated that he and showrunner Chris Mundy would meet together ahead of each season to talk about the overall themes and where the story may be going.
While talking about the show, both Jimmy and Jason try to be as careful of not spoiling the show as they could be. But when Jimmy tries to ask Bateman if the Byrde has a happy ending? Jason replies that the viewers will find a happy ending of sorts but not completely.
“I want it to be a happy ending, but there’s got to be a little of a, Well, is it happy for them?‘” the actor says. This is not surprising considering the fan theories of the fall of the Byrdes making the rounds. Then, there is Ruth, blinded by rage and vengeance, and ready to take on the Byrdes.

Was the ending planned all along?
When asked if the ending of the show was pre-planned from the first season, Jason Bateman says that when the program originally premiered in July of 2017, the cast and crew didn’t know how things would conclude.
“Hopefully the audience will think, ‘Ah, they’ve kind of threaded the needle between a happy ending — but they’re limping.’” added the actor.
