Switching from editing comedy to dealing with true crime usually takes a lot of effort, but for Stephanie Filo, it was just another obstacle she had to face, even confirming to Variety in an interview that it was the most emotionally challenging of her editing career. As with creating any serial killer movie or series, the most challenging task involved ensuring that the audience wouldn’t develop sympathy for Dahmer, portrayed by Evan Peters. However, the three-time Emmy winner overcame these obstacles by incorporating cut scenes to provide a comprehensive view of the character.
Filo even brought up the responsibility she felt while working on editing the eighth episode of the series. The Eighth episode consists of the scene of the impact statements. The impact of the scenes caused her to come back to it when she was in a better headspace. It seems to have paid off for the editor, though, giving her global recognition. And while the series resulted in controversies, it also benefitted from the editing, as it won several awards.
With all the criticism that Dahmer received, it will be thrilling to see what the streaming giant has coming.
