‘Wednesday’ Designer Colleen Atwood Revealed a Major Way Jenna Ortega’s Style on the Netflix Drama Was Built for Young Girls
Jenna Ortega convinced worldwide viewers that she is the best version of Wednesday on the namesake television show. Her amazing costumes had a huge role in making her look convincing. Since fans first saw her clad in black with two pigtails, they have become obsessed with her. Numerous people copied her looks from the show, dropping cosplay videos over the internet. Many loved the way these black outfits matched the dark vibes of the character. However, the reason behind creating these looks was not wholly based on the deadpan teenager, but also on what viewers like.
Designer Colleen Atwood sat down with Netflix Queue last month to break down the outfits she created for Tim Burton’s show. In this interview, she also shed some light on how they modernized the decades-old character with a new style. She revealed that they paid homage to the eldest daughter of the Addams family but updated her traditional ensemble. And Atwood did that on purpose so the young audience could connect with her.

“She’d always sort of been this fixture of a girl — you really didn’t know her,” she remarked. To make this estranged character more familiar to viewers, Colleen Atwood added a touch of modernity to the clothes. The 74-year-old who herself is a legendary figure in the world of costumes did not leave any detail out of sight.
She added stripes and checkerboard prints with a tint of white color to make her look cool and pop on-screen. From Nevermore uniform to the casual outfits Jenna Ortega wore in her dorm, everything was inspired by observing real-world teens in London. In fact, the costume designer spent some time with Ortega, so the costumes come out perfectly.

The 20-year-old was already cast for her breakout role when the three-time Oscar winner joined the team. So she took this opportunity to create designs that could go with her body structure. They also did a photo shoot with Jenna Ortega and Emma Myers at Burton’s home in England.
According to her, they wanted to create a balance between two characters that have completely different choices and vibes too. At one point, there is this girl full of death wishes and allergic to color in life. On the other hand, Enid had a colorful personality that symbolized the wild young wolf inside her. And from what fans saw in the comedy-drama all their plans perfectly fitted the characters.
