For years, rumors floated around the internet that a Pluto animation was happening. In 2017, the GENCO booth disclosed that an adaptation was in the works. But there were no new updates after that about when the said project would reach the viewers. Fans had lost hope until Netflix suddenly dropped a sneak peek at the adaptation recently.

The manga tells the story of a futuristic world where humanoids exist together with humans. But a serial murderer is targeting the seven greatest robots in the world. Europol’s best detective Gesicht is appointed to solve the case, who is also one of the targets. The preview shows Gesicht behind the wheels of the car, driving to an underdeveloped place. We are also treated to a bunch of flashbacks from his past. But then the scene cuts to him entering an abandoned building and fighting with a robot insect. Gesicht escapes through a sewer, but in the sewer, a massive horned robot is hot in his heels.

Before we see what happens to him, the scene turns black. And then we meet our favorite characters, Atom and his sister, Uran. The preview stops there and confirms that the series will hit the steamer this year. Anime News Network reports that Genco and Tezuka Productions are jointly producing the series while M2’s Masao Maruyama is overseeing the animation. The confirmed cast includes Shinshu Fuji, Yoko Hikasa, and Minori Suzuki.

The series is based on Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki’s manga of the same name. The manga actually builds on The Greatest Robot On Earth arc from Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy. The seinen drama was hugely popular and ran from 2003 to 2009. It was published in multiple countries. Given its immense popularity, it will be interesting to see what Netflix does with the adaptation.
