Wait Is Over! ‘Derry Girls’ Season 3 Gets a Release Date After Three Year Production Hiatus

Derry Girls has always been a project to look out for. Season 3, which was bound to release earlier, went through various delays due to the pandemic. But now, it seems like the audience won’t have to wait any longer as the third season of the sitcom has finally confirmed its release date. The Irish teen girls are coming back to our screens after three years with more adventure and cheer, on October 7. Written by Lisa McGee, the third season will mark the end of the comedy series.

Derry Girls season 3 details

Unlike earlier seasons, season 3, which is set to return in October, will have a total of 7 episodes. The extra-long seventh episode will serve as the final episode. However, the cast and crew will remain the same as all five characters are going to feature in the season finale. From Nicola Coughlan and Saoirse-Monica Jackson to Jamie-Lee O’Donnell and Dylan Llewellyn, the ensemble will come together for one last time in October.

Sadly, anxious “nervous wreck” Clare Devlin played by Coughlan will have a reduced role due to her prior commitment to Bridgerton. Netflix confirmed the release date on Twitter. The streamer also shared some images from the upcoming final season. Fans seem excited but equally sad as their favourite series will reach its end.

Creator of the show Lisa McGee also revealed that Derry Girls season 3 would be the last for the Netflix comedy. “It was always the plan to say goodbye after three [seasons],said McGee.

Overview of the show

Derry Girls first premiered on Netflix in 2018 and has become a memorable show ever since. The series is also one of the biggest hits of British television network Channel 4.  The comedy-drama is set during the political conflict of Northern Ireland more commonly known as irregular war. Derry Girls follows five students from a Catholic school struggling with the traditional ways of their school as they enter their teen years. Moreover, beyond the screens, the series has had a powerful cultural impact on the town of Derry.

Luckily, fans from UK and Ireland have already seen how the series ends and it’s about time till the rest of us do too.
