As Season 6 Part 1 of The Crown aired on Netflix today, viewers were ready to dive into the story where it left off. At the previous season’s end, the royals seemed to be progressing in their lives. The culminating scene showed Queen Elizabeth questioning certain archaic traditions while Princess Diana sat smiling after having officially left the palace.

Now audiences were expecting to be greeted by the young prince’s faces first as Season 6 began because the makers of the series had revealed that this season would focus on them. However, what came next was rather unexpected for all.

In the opening scene, the first thing depicted is a dark, gloomy night in Paris. This was obviously referring to the night Princess Diana lost her life in a car crash. Well, unlike the widely touted theory that the Princess’ accident was caused by a paparazzi chase, the show refrained from showing it so. This theory is claimed by not only by many fans but also Prince Harry

After her passing and also in his memoir, her son had alleged that the media was somewhat at fault. Although the show’s creator had previously revealed that the 39-year-old was not involved in its making despite his affiliation with Netflix, many were expecting The Crown to depict the scene similar to what he alleged. Instead, the sequence only showed a lone car entering the tunnel where the fateful event occurred.

This came as a shock to many since the series and its cast had also hinted at it going a different way.

Last week, Elizabeth Debicki who portrays Princess Diana spoke of the latest season’s shooting. She also confessed that the most difficult scene to play out turned out to be her character’s death. According to her, the paparazzi chase that led to her death was nothing short of “animalistic”. This led many to believe that the flashes of their cameras would follow the princess into the tunnel, too.

However, the paparazzi seemed to have fallen behind on the scene right before the car reached the short tunnel. The depiction was not nearly as hard-hitting as audiences expected. Since the second part of season 6 is yet to come out, maybe the makers might expand on this event later.
