It has been more than two decades since we were introduced to Carmen and Juni Cortez, the main characters of the multi-million dollar Spy Kids franchise and also parental nightmares. They are also at the core, mavericks who wreaked havoc in an era where Harry Potter’s wand and Frodo Baggins’ rings could rake in a collection of $1 Billion with a flick. And once again, as crop tops turn into corsets and Charles Addams’ fictional family once again becomes a favorite, Netflix is bringing on another addition to Spy Kids with SPY KIDS: Armageddon.

Not only has Netflix found itself a treasure from the past decade in Spy Kids, but the franchise also possesses the acme of all its money-makers: a Latin American family just like You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, a mind-blogging mystery from Jennifer Aniston’s Murder Mystery 2, and kids high on adventure, curiosity, and tech from Stranger Things. And as the latter faces unprecedented delay, the streamer has wasted no time in dropping the first poster of SPY KIDS: Armageddon.

It has been a minute since the safety of the world was put into the hands of adventure-craving kids of secret agents. Therefore, the Netflix Spy Kids movie has a new cast. Gina Rodriguez, Zachary Levi, Everly Carganilla, and Connor Esterson, adorned with the suavest black glasses and overalls, grace the poster that reads “Meet the next generation“. The OTT Mogul announced last month that SPY KIDS: Armageddon will premiere on Netflix on the 22nd of September. And as if that was not already an announcement exciting enough, the movie will also retain all its past glory.

Much like the previous multi-million dollar movies of the franchise, SPY KIDS: Armageddon will also be directed by Robert Rodriguez. And if there is one universal rule that most spin-offs follow other than The Witcher: Blood Origin is that if the original director remains, then the series prevails.

While it is reassuring to have not one but two of Rodriguez on the creator panel as his son, Racer Max, also helped with the screenplay, SPY KIDS: Armageddon has huge shoes to fill.

The blessings that Netflix has acquired by signing with Robert Rodriguez to make a Spy Kids movie in 2023  also look like curses if seen from a different angle. The streamer may be pitching a new generation, but most fans of the franchise have been here for twenty years. Moreover, the previous movies, although four, all revolved around the same family.

Jessica Alba, Rowan Blanchard, Daryl Sabara, and Alexa PenaVega were the stars of the franchise from 2001 to 2011. While Netflix did not have a height requirement, it dug into its past hits to feature promising actors as the new generation of Spy Kids. But it is not clear if fans are happy with the idea. In any case, with the Spy Kids: Armageddon release date set for 22nd September, there will be plenty of eyes watching.
