The film features Cruise as US Army Captain Nathan Algren, who was dispatched to Japan in 1876 as a military consultant to assist the Emperor in putting down a samurai insurrection following the Meiji Restoration. 

After losing his first fight, Lord Moritsugu Katsumoto (Watanabe) captures Algren and teaches him the traditions of the samurai. After having a change of heart, Algren fights with Katsumoto to help them keep their independence from the Emperor.

The Last Samurai garnered positive reviews from reviewers and received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Supporting Actor for Watanabe.

However, in later years, the film has been receiving criticism for romanticizing Japanese and samurai culture, disregarding essential components of the Meiji Restoration, and adhering to the white savior cliché, in which a white hero plays a significant role in the emancipation of non-white people.
