Throwback to George VI’s 1937 Coronation as We Await the Premiere of King Charles III’s Coronation

King Charles III’s upcoming coronation is the first that Britain will be witnessing in a long time. The crowning ceremony of the new King has generated anticipation that is incalculable. However, King George VI’s coronation comes a close second. England held its last coronation in 1953 as Queen Elizabeth II took over the throne; her reign was only shy of a few decades from expanding over a century. Since then, the monarchy has gone through a plethora of changes, both in the political realm and in the family itself. That King Charles III and King George VI are both categorized under ‘unlikely monarchs’ is not the only thing that binds them together.

As the date of King Charles’ coronation approaches closer, the anticipation grows higher, wondering what the big day is going to look like. To aid their imagination, Sally Bedell Smith has released a book detailing the events of King George VI’s coronation.

Will King Charles’ coronation be a lookalike of King George VI’s coronation?

That King Charles’ coronation will be unlike any other coronation is a given. Whether his younger son Prince Harry will be present at the ceremony or if his presence will have any significance in the crowning ceremony is still much of a conundrum.

Despite the unique elements in King Charles’ ceremony such as the Queen consort reusing a crown, there are a notable amount of similarities that can be fetched from King George VI’s coronation owing to Sally Bedell Smith’s George VI and Elizabeth: The Marriage That Saved Monarchy. An extract from the book as revealed by People reads that King George found the wait to be “nerve-wracking,” .

The extract also highlights how important the support of Queen Elizabeth was everything as he took up the mantle of the King of England. While much is to be seen, Queen Consort Camilla also seems to be the driving force behind King Charles’ policies of a modern monarchy in England.

What we left behind at 1937 coronation

Nearly a century after King George’s coronation, as King Charles takes his seat near the Chair of Estate, a lot has changed. The ceremony which Sally Bedell Smith revealed in her book was nearly two hours long, whereas King Charles will be aiming for a sixty-minutes roundup.

King George VI’s coronation was witnessed by eight thousand guests, whereas this time around it has been cut down by a huge margin. An estimated 2,000 guests will reportedly show up at Westminster Abbey.
