Peaky Blinders is often held as one of the best British TV shows out there, so it really hit everyone when they announced it was coming to an end. Fortunately, even though the show was originally meant to conclude after its sixth season, showrunner Steven Knight let everyone know that the story will continue with a movie for its seventh and final part. Now, Cillian Murphy has also weighed in on the upcoming Netflix film.
Murphy not only expressed his excitement about re-collaborating with the creators, but he also shared what the show really aims to honor.

The Peaky Blinders movie has officially begun its production. And from the sets, Cillian Murphy spoke to Netflix Tudum about stepping back into his iconic role. The actor expressed that it was “gratifying” for him to reunite with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the project. Murphy also stated that “this is one for the fans.” The 48-year-old star even took a moment to pose for a photo with Steven Knight on set. Nonetheless, there is a big change coming with this movie compared to the Netflix show.
Peaky Blinders originally focused on the story of a Birmingham mob syndicate in the years after World War I. But in this upcoming movie, the setting will shift to World War II. It is reasonable to assume that Thomas Shelby and his gang will also feel the impact of the war. Interestingly, this new setting has created a link between this movie and Cillian Murphy’s previous Oscar-winning film, Oppenheimer.
Now that the Peaky Blinders movie is definitely taking place during World War II, this will be Murphy's second film since Oppenheimer that explores that time period- and third film overall.

Every time Cillian Murphy has done a World War II film, it turned out to be the actor's very best movie of all time. The blockbuster success from last year, the Christopher Nolan film, Oppenheimer, focused on the titular physicist who developed the first nuclear weapons during World War II. But even before Oppenheimer, back in 2017, Murphy was part of Nolan's another World War II film, Dunkirk.
Dunkirk told the intertwined stories of the real-life evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940 and is often remembered as one of the greatest World War II films ever made. That said, it will be interesting to see how the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie incorporates the war into its storyline, especially since Cillian Murphy has become so closely associated with the World War II setting by now.
