30% Down: ‘The Witcher’ Season 3 Viewership Sees Massive Drop With Henry Cavill Exiting the Show
If you’re a fan of The Witcher, chances are you are familiar with its devoted fan following. People enjoy watching the thrilling exploits of Geralt of Rivia who hunts monsters and packs a punch. He is brought to life brilliantly by Henry Cavill, who has captured viewers’ hearts with his portrayal of the character. The British actor will end his run with the show in the upcoming Season 3 finale, unfortunately. However, the star is not the only one leaving the show.
According to reports from Redanian Intelligence, the series has seen a decline in viewership during Season 3 in comparison to Season 2. In the first week of Season 3, there was a 30% decrease in viewers based on Netflix’s newly introduced measurement of views. To make matters worse, the viewership continued to decline with each episode, resulting in a loss of half the audience by Episode 5. What is causing this viewership crisis? Is it the fact that Henry Cavill is leaving The Witcher? Or is there something else too?
Although one reason for this decline is the departure of Henry Cavill, it is not the only one. Another reason is that The Witcher Season 2 was divisive among critics and viewers. It received 68% ratings on Rotten Tomatoes as opposed to 89% for the first season. The third season also had a different format than the previous seasons. It consisted of two parts, each with six episodes. Some fans choose to watch the whole season after it is available, while some did not understand the change and were unsure about the release of new episodes.

A handful of viewers also expressed dissatisfaction with the season, citing reasons such as pacing issues, an inconsistent tone, or deviations from the source material (books and games). Consequently, their engagement and interest waned, leading them to hop back on Season 3.
Is this the end for The Witcher? Netflix says no.

Despite the low reception of the show currently, Netflix has green-lit Season 4 of the show. Liam Hemsworth, from The Hunger Games and Independence Day: Resurgence has been chosen to portray the character of Geralt. Hemsworth expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm about taking on this role, mentioning that he admires Cavill’s work. In response, Cavill himself commended Hemsworth and wished him the best in his exploration of this complex character.
The Season 3 finale’s recently released trailer also hinted at a bloody and somber ending. The next season will catch up from where this season leaves off. Despite the disappointment, fans also anticipate the portrayal of Geralt that Hemsworth will bring to the table. Even though the lead will be different, as long as Netflix stays true to the source material fans may allow the show a chance at renewal. Netflix will release the final episodes of the second part of season 3 later this month.
