The Witcher 3 has promised an intensification of the horrors that Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer will be met with. Now more than ever, since they have come to the realization of how much they mean to each other. But the previous seasons have already seen Geralt fight off Basilisks, Ghouls, Kikimoras, Leshies. Each more dangerous than the other. And in order to impress the audiences, which is proving to be extremely hard given the exit of a certain Henry Cavill, creators are sending him their greatest villain. Or so fans thought.

It was revealed towards the end of Season 2 that Ciri is the daughter of Emperor Emphyr and that he is willing to turn every stone in order to find her for his own vested interest. And while his vicious nature is clear as day, Lauren Hissrich has chosen to put him on gray ground.

The cast and the creators sat down to do an in-depth interview with Netflix’s TUDUM to talk about their characters and what awaits them in Season 3. And Hissrich washed off all the good work Bart Edwards put in to make sure one gets a shiver down their spine at one glance from the White Flame as she said, “The biggest danger is that there are no good or bad guys.”

The Witcher creator even goes on to justify Emperor Emphyr’s dedicated search for Ciri as “family is worth fighting for.” The water hits the roof, however, when she compares Emphyr’s fight to find Ciri to Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer’s fight to protect each other. “But suddenly you realize what he wants is his daughter back. I’ve just said family’s worth fighting for. So isn’t he kind of doing the same thing?” she says.

“We had the choice…” – Showrunner of ‘The Witcher’ Lauren Hissrich Explains the Exit of Henry Cavill

For those who have stumbled upon The Witcher on Netflix without any prior knowledge of the Andrzej Sapkowski masterpiece that it is based on it is all well and good. However, those who have played the game or read the book or even watched Henry Cavill’s The Witcher interviews, can only find themself asking a question to Hissrich as a reply to her own.

The Witcher Fans react to Lauren Hissrich defending Emperor Emphyr

Over the past two seasons, fans have come to gather that the series does not plan to stick to the book word to word. Nor is it looking to mirror the slow burn of Sapkowski’s book where it was revealed in the last book ‘The Lady of the Lake’ that Emperor Emphyr is Ciri’s father as clear by the Season 2 finale. And fans have compromised a lot, hoping that the digress from the source material will culminate into a greater plot ultimately. However, to justify the intention behind Emperor Emphyr’s search for Ciri as a fight for the family is absolutely unacceptable to the fans.

Lauren Hissrich’s statement about Emperor Emphyr has served as a catalyst in proving true a doubt that fans have had for a long time, “Has she even read the books?“.

If a stranger to the books were to stumble upon the discussion, they would reason Hissrich’s sugarcoating of Emperor Emphyr as her love for the character. But when it is put into context, that said character is the one who wants to have a kid with his daughter in order to rule the world, it becomes a pill impossible to swallow.

The only conclusion apart from the creator of the show not reading the source material that the series is based on that fans have reached is that Lauren Hissrich has other plans for Emperor Emphyr. And this again is not putting her in any good books.
