In a series bursting at the seams with strong characters, Liam Hemsworth will not be the only one holding the bag to carry The Witcher on his own. Naturally, much of the focus in The Witcher season 4 will be on Hemsworth, who is about to step into Henry Cavill‘s big shoes. Given how iconic Cavill’s Geralt was in the first three seasons, it will not be a cakewalk for The Hunger Games actor. Even if Hemsworth hits the nail as Geralt, some fans may still be as stubborn as a stone wall when accepting a new face for their favorite characters. 

Luckily, The Witcher makers have a trick up their sleeve to make this transition as smooth as butter. 

The Witcher makers on Liam Hemsworth stepping into the role of Geralt

In a 2023 interview with Wyborcza, producer Tomek Baginski shared how the show plans to navigate the transition from Henry Cavill to Liam Hemsworth. He pointed to the source material, The Lady of the Lake, which remains one of the most divisive Witcher books. In the book’s narrative, the series was always set to go meta and explore how Geralt of Rivia is seen through different lenses. With the upcoming recast, the creators aim to leverage these diverse perspectives to smoothly transition from Cavill to Hemsworth.

Baginski also expressed his conviction that the Season 4 plans align closely with the books. However, he admitted that people might have different interpretations about the shift and some may struggle to accept the change in Geralt’s appearance. Therefore, the producer was keeping his fingers crossed about the audience’s take on it. Nevertheless, the cast members are pretty confident about Liam Hemsworth playing Geralt, especially Anya Chalotra. 

In a 2023 interview, the actress shared her thoughts about playing opposite a new Geralt. Chalotra also revealed whether she was going to replicate the same chemistry with Hemsworth as she did with Cavill.

In an interview with Variety, the actress revealed that Henry Cavill’s exit from the show was shocking to every cast member. In fact, the cast had no idea about his departure from the franchise until they started filming season 3. Chalotra shared that although she had spent a “wonderful five years” with Henry Cavill, she is excited to see what Liam Hemsworth will bring to the table. “Liam will be brilliant, I’m sure”, said the British actress. 

When questioned about recreating the scorching chemistry she had with Cavill on screen, the actress shared that they never had a “chemistry test”. As per Chalotra, the true test of Hemsworth’s chemistry with the entire cast will only unfold when the 33-year-old actor introduces his unique flavor to the role of Geralt. With different faces, the question of whether the characteristics of Hemsworth’s Geralt will align with Cavill’s is still up in the air.
