The Ups and Downs in Viewership Ratings of ‘The Witcher’ That Even Henry Cavill Could Not Stop
The Witcher showed the fans’ favorite Henry Cavill in a form never seen before. Donning Geralt’s sword, the Krypton native took on another hero’s cape aside from the red and blue in Man of Steel. Over the years, the actor’s Superman character has made appearances in Justice League and the most recent, Black Adam. On one hand, James Gunn dropped the British actor from the DC universe, and on the other, it was his exit from the role of Geralt of Rivia. Undoubtedly, the Enola Holmes actor garnered fans worldwide.
Moreover, his relationship with Anya Chalotra’s Yennefer and Freya Allen’s Ciri gave birth to an on-screen family that carried the storyline throughout the years. But what are the numbers from this hit show and how much did the fans watch the drama on their OTT screens?

Netflix had metrics available for 12.8 weeks of the first season, 6 weeks of the second season, and 8 weeks of the third and latest one. While one may argue over the unfairness of the weeks’ based views, the OTT giant relied on these measures. Breaking it down further, Redanian Intelligence reports, the 519.4 million viewed hours of season 2 directly translated into 67.6 million views per week. The 327.7 million viewed hours of season 3 becomes 41.1 million views per week if we calculate it based on 6 weeks for both seasons. This was a 39% drop in viewership, a little more than the 30% drop seen when the season first dropped.
The 663.6M hours viewed in season 1 became 83M per week, making the drop from season 3 to season 1 would be a whopping 48%. The third season was a hit in terms of being on the Top 19 charts, owing to the two-part release as compared to the second season. Season 3 remained on the Top 10 list for two weeks longer compared to Season 2. But the numbers say otherwise. What is to be taken into account, however, is Netflix’s change of data interpretation.
The change in the way viewership data is released has evolved over time.

While Netflix has evolved its viewership counting ways, several platforms are notorious for having their own versions of data. The platform followed the method of counting all the hours viewed by users worldwide. But this method had a loophole. Shows with more number of episodes and run time did fairly well compared to those of shorter formats.
But the recent shift made it more fair. The “viewed hours” were divided by the total runtime of the show. This leveled all show up and instead gave us the hours viewed without undue advantage.
