The ‘One Piece’ Main Cast’s Heartwarming Bond With Their Characters
For fans of the beloved One Piece anime franchise, each character holds a special place in their heart. The cast of Netflix’s live-action adaptation had an almost impossible task ahead of them because becoming a member of the Straw Hats crew transcends the mere act of donning a costume. And to deliver a good live-action after so many failed attempts in the past just added to that challenge. Yet, the Netflix series managed the impossible with help from its dedicated team.
Through profound commitment and hours of grueling work, the One Piece actors became worthy of playing their respective roles. In the process, the cast came to love all the little quirks of their characters which they recently shared with fans.

Recently, Netflix interviewed the cast of One Piece to ask what made them love playing their characters. Calling his character of Monkey D. Luffy a “super cheerful guy”, Iñaki Godoy said that they “both share a lot of the same values.” One thing that especially endeared him to the process was all “the eating scenes” he got to indulge in while portraying Luffy’s large appetite.
For Taz Skylar, who plays Sanji, his favorite aspect was getting to spend time and learn from a chef trained by Jamie Oliver for his role. Besides that, his training that allowed him to pull off fighting with just his feet was another highlight.
While Skylar was learning to grill onions in a bustling restaurant, another member was getting his ears pierced. But this actor had no qualms about doing so because he was getting to play his favorite character.

For Mackenyu, who played the green-haired swordsman, Zoro, the role did not require “much research.” He revealed that this was because Zoro was always his “favorite character” from One Piece. Meanwhile, Emily Rudd who is a massive anime enthusiast, was also pretty familiar with the anime already. According to her, it was Nami’s “clever” mind that she loved the most.
Lastly, Jacob Romero, who played the meek Usopp, felt that his character was “the realest” and also the Straw Hat’s “voice of reason.” He especially loved the way Usopp’s story-telling lifted the beloved crew’s spirits.
