Two years ago, original movies and shows made up more than 50% of Netflix’s library for the first time in company history. However, after the licensing market reopened and shows like Suits started making waves on the platform, the appetite for Netflix originals had noticeably dwindled. Nonetheless, the streaming giant has announced to pour a large share of its $17 billion content budget into originals in 2024. This birthed the production of a brand new science fiction series on the platform, The Electric State.

Here is everything to know about the upcoming movie, its star-studded cast, and the anticipated release.

Based on the 2018 graphic novel by author Simon Stålenhag, The Electric State is an upcoming science fiction film directed by Marvel duo Anthony and Joe Russo and written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The film will be headlined by Netflix’s darling Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, who previously worked with the Russo Brothers on the last two Avengers movies. The dystopian post-apocalyptic film does not have a precise release date yet; however, it is scheduled for a March 2025 window.

The Electric State will be available exclusively on Netflix when it hits the screens. However, a theatrical release is not entirely off the table either, as the Russos' previous Netflix film, The Gray Man, had a limited theatrical run before landing on the streaming service. This will mark Millie Bobby Brown’s fourth Netflix venture, following Stranger Things, Damsel and Enola Holmes, but it will be her first collaboration with the Russo Brothers. And it looks like the actress has already won the filmmaking duo’s favor.

Earlier this year, Joe Russo sang high praises of the young actress and her talents, even comparing her to a popular MCU actor.

During the Sands: International Film Festival in St Andrews, Scotland, Joe Russo told GamesRadar+ how much they loved working with Millie Bobby Brown. Addressing her as their “surrogate child,” the filmmaker explained how difficult it is to handle fame at such a young age since everyone has an opinion about her. However, Brown has done a stellar job of tuning out the noise and keeping her focus on the craft.

Joe Russo also likened the actress to Spider-Man star Tom Holland. “She’s similar to Tom Holland in many ways - so young and so talented,” said the 53-year-old. Anthony Russo further hailed the original source of The Electric State as a "really wonderful book." Brown, who has taken the lead in Netflix projects thrice now, will once again be the main player as a girl on a quest to find her long-lost brother, with a robot along for the ride.
