2022 saw the rise of OTT platforms, unlike any other year. This meant that the viewers got to experience more variety in content. And filmmakers were willing to take risks that they would have earlier not dared to take for fear of flopping at the box office. Although Netflix was not the only strong contender in the OTT field this year. From Hulu, and Amazon, to HBO and Apple TV+, all OTT services released quality content for their subscribers. With the year coming close to an end, the Critics Choice Award 2023 has released its nominations for this year. Netflix gets nominated as ‘Top Streamer’ at the Critics Choice award

The 28th Annual Critics Choice Awards announced its list of nominees for the award ceremony that will take place on the 15th of January of the upcoming year. Given how HBO released House of the Dragon which has a fanbase as passionate as that of Harry Potter, and FX was constantly releasing buzz-worthy competition, Netflix did not have an easy slide this year.

Despite the growing competition in OTT, the streaming giant has managed to be nominated as one of the Top streamers by Critics. FX, HBO, and Netflix are all tied with fifteen points while Hulu comes close with fourteen points. Critic or no critic, the streaming giant has us all wrapped around its finger with its hilarious tweets.

Now let us look at the entities that made Netflix one of the top streamers this year.

The Crown gets nominated for Critics Choice Awards

The one-of-a-kind Netflix series The Crown rocked the world with its release. Its depiction of the royal family was far too close to reality and unlike anything, fans had witnessed before. Given that the series revolves around the Monarchy of Britain, it ruffled a lot of feathers. Directed by Peter Morgan, the Netflix series entails top-notch performances and a compelling storyline.

While the series lacks nothing, its fictional retelling of what the People’s Princess, Lady Diana had to face is what garnered the most attention. Albeit the show not having the most number of nominations this year, it is highly likely to win in the Best Drama series category.

The Crown bagged four awards at the Critics Choice Awards in 2021 and with the stellar season five that leads up to the divorce of Princess Diana and King Charles, it’s an easy slide to victory.

Ozark actress nominated for Best Actress by critics

Netflix’s greatest thriller Ozark may be over but the awards coming its way are not. Moreover, for the past few years, the Jason Bateman series is among the titles that have bagged the most numbers of Critics Choice Awards.

Although this year, the series itself could not make it to the best drama list, Laura Linney who plays the most chaotic character in Ozark, which in itself is a reputable title, is nominated for the Best Actress in a drama series category. In order to win, Laura Linney has to beat Christine Baranski, Sharon Horgan, Mandy Moore, Kelly Reilly, and Zendaya, who have all had a wonderful year at OTT.

Ozark actress gets nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ at the Critics Choice Awards 2023

Netflix’s Ozark had some of the best female characters. Ruth, in particular, won hearts with her character growth and identity. And we have Julia Garner to thank for making the character as iconic as it is today. Garner has garnered quite a number of awards for her portrayal of Ruth.

And this year too, she is a top contender in the ‘Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series” category. Other talented female nominees in this category include Milly Alcock, Carol Burnett, Jennifer Coolidge, Julia Garner Audra McDonald, and Rhea Seehorn. Julia Garner is also nominated for the ‘Best Actress in a limited series or movie made for Television Category’ for her performance in Inventing Anna.

Dead to Me gets nominated in two categories at the Critics Choice Awards

The quirky comedy series on Netflix, Dead to Me, was one of the best comic releases this year. Furthermore, the black comedy was widely appreciated for the release of its third season. Christina Applegate who plays Jen Harding in the series is nominated for the Best Actress in a Comedy series category.

And given her breathtaking performance, we are sure she will win. Following Christina Applegate, James Marsden has been nominated in the best comedy series category.

Dahmer actress gets nominated for the Critics Choice Awards

Amidst all the gore and madness in Netflix’s horrifying retelling of Jeffrey Dahmer’s murders, we all took a moment to applaud Niecy Nash as an actress. Nash played Glenda Cleveland, the neighbor who Dahmer almost drove in the series.

Netflix dominates ‘Best Foreign Language series’ category at the Critics Choice Award

Apart from its mind-blowing documentaries, Netflix is known for its diversity. The streaming giant has a huge hand in bringing underrated series from around the globe to the mainstream. We all know what happened when it released Squid Game. Furthermore, this year too, Netflix played its diversity cards right.

This year too it blessed us with multiple brilliant series’ in various languages. With 1899, Borgen, Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and Kleo, the OTT Mughal is slaying in this category.

3 Netflix comedy specials nominated for the ‘Best Comedy Special’ at the Critics Choice Award

Having a Netflix special for any stand-up comic is like having an Oscar. The streaming giant always has some of the best comedy specials in its catalog.

And this year, Fortune Feimster: Good Fortune, Joel Kim Booster: Psychosexual, and Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special have been nominated for Best Comedy Special at the Critics Choice Awards 2022.
