Heartstopper is a breath of fresh air among the pile of shows with stereotypical depictions of homosexuality. With 100% ratings on rotten tomatoes and being in the top ten most-watched Netflix series, all can agree that Heartstopper is a must-see. The highlight of the show, Charlie and Nick, played by Joe Locke and Kit Connor, won millions of hearts with their on-screen chemistry in season 2.
They are so far the most accurate depiction of teenage romance characters, which can be attributed to the fact that they are themselves teens. During an interview with GQ, the 19-year-old actor shared, “I think it makes it more authentic because there’s a time and place for 35-year-olds playing 16-year-olds, you know.” This case is very rare in other movies/series like Euphoria, Sex Education, Never Have I Ever, or even The Kissing Booth.

Season 2 drew a lot of followers for smashing stereotypes surrounding LGBTQ and society. As the new couple in town, Nick and Charlie tried to accept their relationship, they realized that coming out of the closet does not necessarily change the world around them. Starting with Charlie’s eating disorder to the school trip to Paris, there is a lot to unravel in season 2 of Heartstopper.
Fans are not just in awe of their characters, but they are showering them with love off-screen as well.

i’m never ever getting over how talented joe and kit are especially compared to their ages. the whole dialogue was improvisation, they really told them nothing about what to say and they both delivered a perfect, adorable, slightly flirty bantering scene pic.twitter.com/f8IIP5J5wQ

Not just the main cast, but the supporting cast was also on point and cast perfectly. Every character seemed as if they were meant for the show. Alice, in an interview with YouTuber Gavin Hetherington, said, “I actually can’t believe that we ended up with such a perfect cast.”

The best part about this show, however, is that it caters to not just the LGBTQ community, but to society as a whole. It questions its shortcoming and moral ambiguity that tends to put people in boxes. Nick is a rugby player in the show, which challenges the notion that gay people are usually weak and feminine. Meanwhile, Charlie, with a comparatively frail build, plays the sports well upon trying. The maker Alice said, “I wanted to challenge the idea that a person’s sexuality is determined by their appearance or their interests, or vice versa.”
