Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will once again bring to us the magic, chaos, and brilliance of multiverses. The concept of a multiverse is no more restricted to the Spider-Verse. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse cut the ribbons to countless multiverses, a prime example being Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While madness has always prevailed, the concept of a multiverse is fairly new. The concept of the multiverse was introduced in a superhero movie and was only meant to be owing to a dedicated fanbase that, with or without, the multiverse liked to connect the dots. However, it was not a smooth sail toward success.

Multiverses were first introduced through the animated Into the Spider-Verse and were woven into the blockbuster that brought together the three generations of Spiderman with Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire. Even before its release, the movie generated unprecedented hype because of the speculation that it will entail a multiverse. And the masterminds behind the first Multiverse Phil Lord and Chris Miller, before their big release, have revealed how the multiverses almost did not happen.

In 2018, the release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse garnered commercial success with a $384.3 million worldwide box office collection and numerous awards such as Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, British Academy Film Awards, and Annie Awards, and more that recognized it as the best-animated feature film of the year. However, the genius writers behind Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse, Chris Miller and Phil Lord, revealed in an interview with Empire Magazine, “When we started on [Into The Spider-Verse], studios were nervous that audiences wouldn’t be able to follow this idea of parallel dimensions.”

The success of the movie was way greater than that shown on paper, as more and more big named studios banked on the tried and tested concept of multiverses. The perception that the audience wouldn’t be smart enough to grasp the connections was soon thrown out of the window as the most groundbreaking records were set in cinema owing to it.
