Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from Game of Thrones and Joe Cole from Peaky Blinders have joined to star in Netflix’s new adventurous film, Against the Ice. After the film released on March 2nd, 2022, viewers are now curious about the backstory of the film. The film develops around two explorers, who have to fight harsh weather conditions for survival because they want to properly map Greenland. Needless to say, such a film’s production would require cast and crew to face harsh conditions too, considering the setting. This is a movie you cannot shoot in a studio primarily because you need that authenticity to add flavor to the acting. And that’s exactly what Against the Ice gave us.

Behind-the-scene of Against The Ice

We know already that Against the Ice finds its inspiration in the book Two Against The Ice by Ejnar Mikkelsen. The book highlight Mikkelsen’s own life story, who was a Danish explorer and Captain. We mainly knew him for the Greenland expedition, where he spent two winters, close to losing his sanity.

This story is about companionship and survival: A captain and mechanic, put under extreme weather conditions in Northeastern Greenland.

Here are some of the fact we bet you didn’t know about the film (we didn’t either until this video):

  • They shot the exterior scenes in the film at actual locations with all the elements.
  • The production team did an amazing job when there was no visibility properly during the snow. According to Waldau, no one recreates these scenes, like the production team of Against the Ice. He says, “I don’t think you could recreate this. Even with all the amazing CGI in the world.”
  • Nineteen dogs (Greenlandic dogs) were provided for the shoot of the film.
  • The crew and cast even had to shoot in Langjokull, the glacier, to visualize the polar bear fighting scene.
  • 138 persons have worked together for 35 days in Greenland, to make Against the Ice a successful film.
